Driving from Aswan to Wadi Halfa by road.

Dear all

We are planning to drive from Aswan through Abu Simbel to Wadi Halfa in Sudan by road.

Can anyone tell me if this road is driveable and if its open to british tourists? Im also wondering if there is a crossing from Abu Simbel to Wadi Halfa.

Hello wisdomhot,
First post eh?
Well, heres the situation, there is a road, but you can't use it.
That's why there is soooooooooooooooooo much on 'How to Aswan to Wadi Halfra'

Yes, we don't use the ferry by choice, the way it is at the moment, and has been since, well, donkey's years, been the only way to get from Egypt into Sudan, and there does not seem to be any changes in the future.

I have thoughts that the 'Blue Nile Company' who run the ferry service from Aswan to Wadi Halfra, are paying the governments a 'back hand' NOT to build a road crossing !

We are currently in Aswan...
I asked the same question to Mr Yaya from Adam's camp here in Aswan. He said the only people who are allowed to use the road is the military and the UN. To rub salt into the wound, there is a sign about 30km from Abu Simbel which says Wadi Halfa...this way!!!!

Hello Pumbaa, please take my regards to Yaya, met him last February while waiting the WH Ferry. Hope he got his new permit for his campground.
We had nice fish to his place.

Despite the restrictions, do you know the quality of the road? Is it a dirt track, gravel or even tarmac?
