Dodoma to Arusha

Can anyone tell me what the road from Dodoma to Arusha is like at the moment? The last report I could find of this road is 3 years old - and it was not good!

We want to travel it on bikes.

Any comments / thoughts appreciated.

I rode that road 32 years ago on an RD350 - it was reasonable gravel back then - bit bumpy but just your average gravel road.

Unless anything extraordinary has occurred, I can't see it could have got any worse since then, especially with Dodoma being the capital.

A couple who travelled with us in Landrover last year went on that road and said it was absolutely shocking - almost worse than the main road to Ethiopia (Moyale road). This was about 10-12 months ago.

It's far easier to go via Morogoro but it will take at least two days unless you drive hard (ca 700 km).

Iringa - Dodoma - Arusha Direct Road

I had difficulty getting information on this road so wanted to post this as an update for members. Drove the Iringa - Dodoma - Arusha road in July 2012 in a Landrover 110. There are a lot of roadworks on the Iringa - Dodoma stretch. It took us 6 hours with few breaks but taking it relatively easy. Variable road condition, but generally not in a bad condition. It is dirt currently. It looks like they ar egoing to tarmac the road but we did not see any tarmac stretches ready yet. Dodoma - Arusha should take around 7 hours. No roadworks. No tarmac. Again relatively easy to drive. I enjoyed the whole trip. Some parts are very beautiful. There is very little traffic at all. You can drive 50kms without seeing oncoming vehicles. Hope this is of help.
