Customs information for Mauretania/Senegal
 

Hi there!
Has anyone recently been travelling to Mauretania or Senegal with his or her own vehicle? what exactly is the situation at the customs on the border of either country?
there is so much different information out there, it is confusing and I would need some first hand info to plan my trip and get the paper work done.

I also don't have any new information (but would like to have!!)

I just heard (need confirmation) that the problem only exists in the north border of Senegal. To solve the problem we are thinking to enter Senegal thru the east border (Senega/Mali)

Entering Senegal with a car over 5 years old, without a carnet, is a problem - regardless of border...

Two weeks ago it was still the same in Diama and Rosso, cars over 5 years need a carnet or convoy.

From Gambia south to Senegal-Casamance, from Bissau or Conakry north to Senegal they were issuing passavants as before, no carnet no convoy.

From Gambia going north into Senegal and from Mali into Senegal, sorry I have no definite info only rumours.

The situation may change soon. In Senegal the customs, Finance ministry and Tourism ministry have put pressure on the government to change the law. A proposal has seeminly been agreed for some time but Wade needs to sign it. This is supposed to happen in june but I would not rely on it.

When I was down in that neck of the woods last year the most useful bit of paperwork was my own ' fiche '

On your PC print out all of your details from passport/log-book + of course parents names/dob. Also your profession etc.

Translate it all into French and make 30 copies.

Hand one out whenever you are stopped - they just pick out the bits they need.

Makes life much easier
