Custom parking in South Africa

Our next leg on the way down will be from Nairobi to South Africa, we were looking for a parking in Mozambique where to leave the car for a few months, but this seems hard.

Our problem is as usual the expiration date on the carnet de passage, do you know if in South Africa there is a custom area parking where we can leave the car for three months in order to close the carnet, take it home to renew and come back with a new one?

Luciano

I left my TroopCarrier in South Africa (Australian registered under a Carnet) and flew in/out several time and had no problem at all. They never asked for anything at the border.

Thanks for reply, i know this, but I need to close the carnet, take it home and make a new one, at our automobile association they say it's not possible to renew it without closing it. So I need to leave the car in a territory where carnet isn't compulsory.

Ciao Luciano

as far as I know there is no "customs parking" or a similar facility. I had to move my car out of the South African Custom Union (to Moz, Sim, etc) to get my CdP cleared (state 2004).
But there is the possibility to prolong the existing CdP ONCE at th SA customs (even if they charge you some Rand for that) for another second year -without the need to leave the country. Maybe this is an option for you, just to change the Carnet some month later...
But, sorry for the question, why do you need a NEW CdP? As long as no important issue had changed (eg owner of the car..) the "new CdP" is just a sequel of the older one and can easily change while leaving the country...

Greets to all "transafricans"

Parking in SA

Luciano, I have an Italian Carnet and I have done the same trip, left the car in Nairobi for a few month then left the car in Cape Town for 6 month, I started a new Carnet without closing the first one, no problem with ACI in Rome. Once back in Cape Town I took the car to Namibia closed the first Carnet with no problems . The car is now in Pretoria and maybe I have to do the same once again. I used only one guarantee/deposit for both Carnet. If you need some more help let me know my email is -asolaro at tin.it-

I have entered into ZA few times on a Kenyan registered bike with no CDP at all. Furthermore, I ve shipped the bike to Spain without logbook just producing the temporary permit of import from ZA customs totally expired. You may close the CDP leaving Moz and do not use entering ZA. If you enter ZA from Swaziland and Swaziland from Moz probably they bother you less than in Ressano Garcia. Nevetheless, I found all ZA borders very easy to cross.

Back to Africa
