bike Shipping from Kenya/Ethiopia to Europe - any tips?

Hi,

I'm in Harare,Zim at the moment, heading up north to Ethiopia/kenya - there i plan to finish my trip and ship the bike to Europe to start a new one.

Does anyone have any experience in shipping from those countries?
which company is recommended?
how long does it take to prepare the bike?
what are the costs?

The other option that i'm looking for is to cross from Ethiopia to Eritrea and try to find a ship to go through the red sea back home to Israel.

i will be very surprised if any one had already done it and can tell me if it's possible.

Thanx

Rom

Try Ethiopian Airlines for cargo back to Europe. It was about 5 years ago, but one of the riders on the east side route that year shipped back to the EU and from memory it was fairly reasonable. Also met two Austrians on KTMS who had shipped their bikes on and out for a few weeks of touring. Not too many options in Addis so you should be able to check out your options and price them with a bit of looking around.

Go straight to Ethiopian Airlines Cargo at the airport in Addis. I dealt with them directly and everything went along without a hitch at point of departure.

However, the route I used meant that the bike had to be transferred from a wide body jet to a narrow body in Amsterdam. So it actually didn't fit into the 2nd aircraft. This was not picked up at the time of sending so it was a bit of a mystery as to where my bike was, as the tracking number showed that the shipment was 'in the air' for a couple of days.

In the end Ethiopian trucked it to Rotterdam where I had made arrangements for it.

Prices are pretty irrelevant as it was a several years ago. Maybe try and contact them on their website before hand.

Remember they will charge you volumetric weight or actual weight depending on which is the greater.

regards,
CJ.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
