Container UK to Namibia late Nov2012 return Late Jan 2013?

Hi all

I'm looking at taking out our LandRover Defender to Southern Africa at the end of November - provisionally arriving Walvis Bay at the beginning of December, and coming back to Britain end of Jan 2013.

While we might RoRo the car I'd prefer to use a shipping container for all the obvious reasons!

If anyone wants to try to fit a bike into the container as well and has similar plans then get in touch!

Not absolutely fixed on Walvis Bay as the destination, but since we want to see Namibia it made sense to start and end the circular trip round Southern Africa at the closest point, and I'm told that Walvis Bay is a lot less hassle than SA ports...

Do you have any contacts for your container to Nabibia

We are looking at all ways to get to Africa at the moment and wondered if you have any ideas on costs or contacts.
Maybe we will meet on our trip we hope to spend about a year driving around.
many thanks

Agent in Walvis Bay

We shipped from Accra Ghana to Walvis bay and used Maratima Logistics in Walvis Bay. A guy called Deon was the contact. Very straight forward, he took paperwork and processed it and arranged for customs to be in the yard when we opened the container. What a difference from the major hassle in Ghana! deon@maritima.com.na

There are lots of companies which do the shipping, but they mainly use the same ships I think! The two options are RoRo which is about £800 or thereabouts, or 20foot container which is more than double that. I'm not SO worried for the outward trip, because I would try to meet the boat to collect the car straight away, but shipping it back I would prefer to put the car in a container rather than leave it on the dock (I saw a truck lose it's transfer box from being left on a dockside for a few days once in West Africa!)

If the car is sent RoRo apparently 'no personal items' can be put in it - but if it's a camper as ours is, then what does this mean? That seems to be a bit of a variable!

Anyhow, if we can find someone who wants to share a container (two cars could go in a 40 footer) then great, otherwise, maybe I take off everything which can be unscrewed off the car & stash it inside and risk RoRo...

Cape Town

Hi a container from Germany to Walvis Bay cost roughly 50% more than one to Cape Town or Durban !

Cheers Thomas

Container to UK

Hi,

I've got a motorbike resting in Cape Town that I would like to ship back to the UK next year.
The timing's great for me and it gives me a great excuse to take a few weeks off to ride up to Walvis Bay.

Please let me know if the offer still stands.

Alasdair.

Count us in!

We are 1,2, or maybe 3 bikes that would liek to join in on this container shipment, Namibia or SA makes little difference. Probalby one way as we'll fly the bikes to the USA after this.

Is this still in planning?
we are in italy and will get up to the UK. Mid to late Novemeber is perfect!

I am slowly givign up on the italy to CapeTown due to north african hassels.

Just wondered if you have any updates from your last post, I'm starting to plan my CT to Namibia trip now and it would be great to hear if there's been any progress.

Thanks,

Alasdair.
