Cheap hotel/hpstel or camping in Freetown

Hi guys,

Can anybody suggest a decentish budget hotel/hostel/guesthouse in Freetown? Somewhere around the 40usd mark for a room?

If not, any ideas for camp spots? Any guesthouses with a decent patch of grass for pitching up on?

Would sure appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,
Freetown accommodation is very expensive for what you get. The cheapest in Aberdeen (near Lumley Beach) is Hotel Mariam $60-ish and there's another one close by (both are very close to the heliport) which I remember being a bit cheaper than that. One is a five minute walk from the other. Also, close to Atlantic bar at the south end of Lumley beach there is a road opposite the police check point. Down there on the left handside is a place with off-street parking called something like Mama's Place.

There are plenty of hotels around Aberdeen, but most are close to $100 odd. I don't recommend staying in Freetown down town especially if you have a vehicle. Traffic and security are a problem there. Camping in the Freetown region is not a good idea.

The other alternate is to head out to the beaches where you can find better accommodation and still be a 20 min ride to town. Check out River No 2 and Lakka Beach (closer to town). These places are more likely to allow camping but be careful of your possessions.

Enjoy Salone.

Hi Cam,

Appreciate the information. Definitely a lack of budget options in Freetown! I think you're right, we will try and head to the beaches for camping. One option I've found is Charms Beach hotel off Cape Road, sounds like it's pretty decent for it's price range and will offer a discounted rate.

Thanks again Cam.

David.

Freetown

Camping at River No2 is very good and safe fresh fish every day
Water in January very nice
safe parking for 4x4

As of January 2011 new road under construction into Freetown from River No2

We also used Family Kingdom in Freetown on the roundabout at Aces Night Club not bad and the family who run it are from Lebanon nice people

Not sure if it is still there, but YMCA was very close to the city centre and was like 7 euro (single room) couple of years ago.

Thanks for all the suggestions I'll look into them further.

Also found this hotel, seems you can negotiate a room for under 40usd per night, looks pretty nice:

Home - Derrycombe Lodge Sierra Leone

Any other thoughts much appreciated.
