Carnet further south to Namib / SA
 

Hi folks,

We are planning a trip from UK to Cape Town www.langebaan-sunset.com and we have been reading the threads on Carnets with interest....has anyone got any experience of getting as far as South Africa via western Africa without a Carnet??

....are assuming here that once you get out of the countries where you can bribe your way across the borders that things get more strict as you head further down into Angola, Namibia and South Africa.

When entering South Africa via Cape Town airport, the carnet is a must. In the meantime we have crossed the border to Lesotho and bach to SA and nobody bothered.

This of course doesn't mean that when entering SA or NAM from he north that you won't be asked at the border.

Hi,

I am not sure if you can make it without Carnet down the coast. But I think it would be wise to register the car in Vicki`s name if she has RSA citizenship. Than it should be possible to bring the car as personal effekt into RSA. After that it should be possible to get the carnet stamped and the car licenced here.

If she brings it in in her name she will have to have paperwork to show that she has owned it for two years (I think).

If I remember correctly, she must PRE-qualify as a returning resident before they will allow the vehicle to be imported duty free.

Best to contact customs in SA before you start changing the paperwork etc...
