Capetown to London, departing this week

This week three friends and myself are starting an overland trip from Capetown to London.

We are currently in Malaysia for a bit of R and R before we hit the road. All going to plan we arrive in Capetown August 2nd to collect our bikes and blaze a trail northward.

The route we take is still up in the air a bit but we are considering attempting a central african east-west crossing, wars permitting. We are starting by heading around the southern coast from Capetown to Durban.

If anyone has any last minute pearls of wisdom about the trip it would be great to hear from you.

We have a website documenting our trip and how little we know about what we are in for!

Cheers, Roll on Africa!

Which route?

So which route of the 4 on your website are you planning? The last one? Or the third one?

If you don't do the first one, we may pass each other at some point - I'm going south on the Western route starting November.

Good luck and stay safe :thumbup1:

Happy Travels

Awesome awesome adventure!

Make sure you go through Plettenberg bay and Knysna on your CT to Durban route, for some pampering before you head into the rough stuff.
I will be eagerly following to see how Julian's Dommie goes (mine will have too be a vicarious traveller from the northern hemisphere).

I can't offer too much advice, but a few things were drummed into me as a kid in Africa: check your boots and sleeping bags before you put yourself in them, check each other occassionally for ticks, work out a plan for when one of you gets left behind/lost and all the other stuff will come as it comes.

Good luck boys!

Thanks for the tips everyone.

We are in Capetown at the moment, our bikes have arrived and we hope they will clear customs today. The plan is to leave Capetown at the end of this week (probably friday 11th) and then hit Riversdale, Knysna and Jeffery's Bay before getting to Grahamstown on the 15th. We were then thinking about either Coffee Bay or Port St. Johns on the way to Durban.

After that we are don't have any hard plans. I think we will try and eventualy hit west africa and cross from Morocco to Europe so we probably will pass you at some point dkmoose. We won't make Port St. Johns in time to meet you though Thomas, sounds like spending a night or two at those backpackers will be a go though.

Cheers everyone, I'll keep you posted.

Hi Phill,

I am sure you will enjoy Port St. Johns, also without me. Unfortunately Tim is close to get Daddy and may will not be around. But I guess Jakes or at least Mike will be around and can lead you to realy cool spots. And be aware of the funny cigarettes und cakes in Port St. Johns. :-)
