Cameroon Visas in Calabar?

Hi Folks

Greetings from Conotou. I'm crossing into Nigeria tomorrow and wondering if anyone has up to date info on obtaining a visa for Cameroon from Calabar instead of Lagos as previously mentioned elsewhere...

Cheers

Rick

I heard you cant them in Calabar but actually have to go to the capital in Abuja. Other than that it is Dakar in Senegal.
We got ours in Dakar but when we got to the Border in the Northern Cameroon I asked the gaurd what would happen if I didnt have one and he said I would have to go the police station in the next biggest town and get one. I am sure a little bribing and I would have had a stamp.

We tried entering Cameroon without a visa in 2004 and where turned back at the border, so I wouldn't count on it. We got a visum in Calabar.

Got one at the Cameroon High Commission in Lagos ($100 - normally 48 hrs). Very relaxed and straight forward. Lagos is ok if you're sensible...

I got a bunch of visas in Calabar in 2007.

It was 135us dollars per visa, cheaper if you paid in Euros, and somewhat more pricier if you paid in Naira.

There was also a very small fee (approx 2us dollars) for someting, but cant remember what.

In at 9am, visas ready by 3pm the same day, and all very friendly. The guys are full of information on the latest road conditions, esp if crossing he Ekok-Mamfe section. Ive just had some pictures from a friend of this road and it is pretty much bone dry, so should be straigt forward enough.

With Christmas fast approaching and the new year its worth checking when the embassy is actually open.....theyre keen on their holidays!

2009 Calabar border crossing & Cameroon Visa

It is still easy to get a visa in Calabar. You will need to provide a letter (in english) asking for a visa, a photocopy of your carnet and of course fill in their forms. Paid 30.000 west african cfa. I happen to have them from my last visit.

If you are doing the overland crossing, back track inland (north) and cross there. the road is actually shorter and is paved to close to the border. the 'direct route' is in terrible condition and is is three times longer than it looks on the map.
From the border to Mamfe, the road is its legendary terrible state and this way during the dry season.
As of 2009 they are rebuilding the road after Mamfe, so it is all dirt & mud after an initial 20 kms of asphalt. The old sections are often single lane in very bad condition. So expect this to be a problem for 2010 & 2011 at the very least.

I would recommend taking the ferry to Limbe or Douala as there are at least 3 sailings a week now. one is only 4 hours long.

I hope this helps you in your planning.

Cheers,

Rick
