Buying a bike in Nairobi - what are the options?

Hello All, A friend and I are researching towards a 3 week trip around Kenya/Tanzania around mid next year. From what we've seen so far, we are leaning towards buying bikes when we arrive in Nairobi over trying to arrange rentals.

We are really looking for local used 125-250cc bikes and would be interested to know if anyone could advise on the availability of such bikes. Internet resources on the subject seem very sparse and given our tight timeframes we'd like to know if this is a feasible option? If so where is a good place to look?

Thanks in advance for any advice/information you might have!

Ask to Chris at Jungle Juction (contact details are in the Hubb). He might know. I bought at his place a BMW R80 GS 2 years ago. Btw, I am not sure if he knows about getting that kind os small bikes you were asking for, but Kenya (in fact, the whole Africa) is full of Chinese crap.
Good luck.

Cheers for the reply.

I did send an email to jungle junction as well but the reply was short and ambiguous.

Any luck in your enquiries? I'm heading out to Kenya in the new year for a 3-5 year job and am tossing up the cost of shipping a bike from UK vs buying locally.

I am afraid I haven't got much further than the above. I've had another reply from Chris which basically said good bikes are hard to come by and expensive (how much exactly I'm unsure). Basically we've had to rethink our trip as it doesn't seem workable now...

Buying Bikes in Nairobi

I have just come from Nairobi, My friend from Germany bought a New Chinese bike in Nairobi for 750euro, he rides a African Twin but his girlfriend was visiting him for six weeks, we rode thru Kenya and Uganda with them and the bike went well (175cc) the only thing they did was tighten the chain. There plan was to sell it back in Nairobi when they had finished. Paper work was a breeze, but you would have to talk to him about what to do, however I do know everything was plane sailing with the whole thing. Parts are easy to find as well because these are the only bikes the locals ride.

He would probably be interested in selling that one as well, all they were doing was the loop around Lake Victoria over to Zanzibar and back to Nairobi.

Cheers
