Buying a bike in South Africa
I would like to buy a bike in South Africa and keep it for a while with my family in Botswana. As i'm familiar with airhead Beemers, that's my preference. Any airhead would be of interest, not just a GS. I might consider a different make, if I see something good.
The obvious questions are: 1. Where can I get the bike? Are there any dealers in SA that specialise in old BMWs? Any other recommendations? 2. How easy will it be for me to get insurance? Or should I perhaps get someone to own and register it in Gabs? 3. Will I need to permanently import it into Botswana? And will that be expensive? There are plenty of SA registered vehicles in Gabs, which I assume are temporarily imported under the SADC trade area agreement. |
R1200gs
Robbo,
I will have a R1200GS in SA toward the end of the year 2008 that will be for sale if your interested. It has been ridden from Oman down the east side. Let me know if your interested. |
Thanks Dingo
I'm looking for a bike that I can maintain myself, with only basic skills, but lots of experience with airheads. I would be interested to hear about your trip from Oman. How did you get across to Africa? Robert |
