Visas for m.c trvel in Africa

I'm planning a m.c trip form Ireland to Cape Town and back (down the east coast and back up the west coast) - I will get a catnet for the bike - but would like to know if I need to apply for travel visa in advance or can I apply for them while trveling i.e. in Moroco can I go to an embasy of a negiboring country or maybe at a border post? Thanks.

My preparation so far show's there's no answer covering that question.
It so much depends on the diffrent country's. For some, you just pay at the border, easy. for some you visit a neighboring country big city and get one instantly or in some day's. And for Sudan i'ts higly suggested to get one in advance at home. It so much depends on your route.

For west route I got all visas on location, except South Africa refused to issue me a visa in Windhoek, Namibia and told me to apply in Europe.

It depends on your nationality, generally it is possible but with some visas like Angolan there is some hassle. The next time I go I'll take 2 passports so visa can be arranged in Europe by post, if required.

I'm also Irish and have done a fair bit of travel around W.Africa.

Morocco - no visa, stamped on arrival
Mauritania - visa can be bought on border for 20euros (no need for photocopy/photos etc)
Senegal - no visa, stamped on arrival
G.Bissau - bought for 10,000CFA at Zigchuinor consul, Casamance - cheaper than getting it in Dakar
Guinea - bought in Bissau for 15,000 for 15 days or 30,000 for 30 days, can be extended for next to nothing in country
Mali - buy at Malian embassy in Nouachkott, Mauritania - 6,500UM
VTE - buy at 'immigration shed' in Ougadougou - not got price but cheapest place in region
Ghana - Irish friend just got his in 3 days from Ghanian Embassy Ougadougou
Sierra Leone - same friend got it in Conakry, Guinea for US$100
Liberia - ditto, in Freetown (whilst there they all thought he was a spy with the Irish reaction forces!)

Same friend (met in Bissau) now in Ghana waiting on a Nigerian visa, if you're interested I'll update this when I hear from him

Kira

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
