any advice on getting a Sudan visa in Ethiopia?

Any recent experiences with getting a visa for Sudan (north) in Ethiopia? I have an Australian passport. No plans to visit Uganda but if getting one in Ethiopia is next to impossible I may make the detour.

Spanish and French couple git a two week transit last week with no problems. Can a transit be extended?

A post on the LonelyPlanet forum from 2007 says a transit visa can be extended in Khartoum. Can someone confirm?

Anyone know what is needed for a 30 day tourist visa from the north Sudan Embassy in Addis?

Seeing as you're not getting Addis specific replies, this is for Nairobi but the rules should be similar:

As you have an Aus passport the nice people at your High Commission give the letter of introduction for free.

I got a 2 month tourist visa in Nairobi in Jan '11 but it seemed random as to whether travellers were given 2 week transit visas or 2 month tourist visas. They didn't ask me if I was driving so I didn't tell them, so didn't give a copy of my carnet.

I was advised by a friend to get my visa in Nairobi as his experience in Addis was that the visa was more expensive and the embassy staff not so friendly. From the date of issue I had 2 months to enter Sudan.

As far as I know there isn't a 30 day tourist visa. No idea if a transit visa can be extended.

Thanks. That's useful to know just in case. I was though wanting to avoid Nairobi.

Actually very recently relations between Sudan and Kenya took some interesting turns...see:

It was easy to get in Nairobi if you end up there - we collected ours the same day. We were only given 2 weeks in country though. 2 month validity period. Others were trying in Addis when we were there - a bit more effort required I think. I know, for example, that they had to produce a forex receipt for the money needed for the visa ie showing they had changed $s or whatever into birr. An ATM receipt wouldn't do.
