Angolan visa - North to South

Hi all,

Just a quick real time update on the visa situation for Angola heading North to South.

We are two bikers looking for a 5 day transit visa. We went to Libreville, were denied despite having a letter of introduction and all the paper work. The comment when we said many people had gotten visas here 'white people?' and turns out only if you have a Gabon residents card.

Went to Congo Brazza and there it was possible, needed the letter of invitation and full docs, but allas our passports were down to only 3 pages and we were denied!!!! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF PAGES BEFORE YOU SET OFF...Olivier at Hippocampe said that many people have been led along by the embassy with promises and bizarre denials so be warned, no cracks in the armour.

They recommended Matadi and off went. Matadi flatly refused our application without even looking at the passports and documents referring us to Kinshasa, which is where we are now...waiting until Tuesday morning to see if our applications have been accepted.

Will keep you posted, but the Angolan transit is proving a bit of an arse to get hold of North to South.

As always its an adventure, no matter how hard things get.
On we go.

Go see our friend Mikeys blog to get the full adventure update until Gabon...may he be speeding along up on some off-road cloud somewhere.

It has been for quite a few years mate - that is why most people get it in Abuja, Nigeria.

I post this here not to mock you but to hopefully get the message out to everybody else:

GET YOUR F'ING ANGOLA VISA IN ABUJA WITHOUT FAIL!

These guys got theirs in Kinshasa so you should be ok:

Good luck ;-)

Angola Issues

Yeah as allready stated you should be able to get your Angola Visa in
Kinshasa. It does beg the question why an attempt was not made in
Kinshasa after crossing from Brazza if you went this way? The Angolan
Embassy in Kinshasa will only acept Visa applications on Mon, Wed and
Fri but in our experience was super helpful and we got our visas the
same day, about 3pm if I remember rightly. As for spare pages for Visas,
rubbish, the Angolan embassy put their Visa sticker on the last spare page
in my passport, but I did cut up my AA Intl Drivers Licence and staple it
over that last spare page to stop Customs Type People stamping it while
crossing Brazza/Kinshasa.
We didn't bother to get our Visas in Abuja because the Angola Embassy
Security guy was a F#%@face and wouldn't let us talk to anyone in the
Embassy about application time/costs etc.
Anyway, good luck and enjoy the road from Matadi to Luanda its
great!! (Statement made with a large ammount of sarcasm).

Hansiger,

Thanks for the update from the road.

First off, heartfelt condolences in regards to the loss of fellow rider on the trip south, Mike. Not sure if the group was still all riding together that day in Gabon when the accident happened, but there could be no worse scenario than to have a riding partner be involved in such a tragic accident. Friendships formed on the road run deep and the loss must be extremely hard for all his family, friends, and riding partners.

We admire your courage to continue the ride and trust that you are riding south with the wind at your back and the warm sun on your face. Ride well and ride safe, our thoughts are with you.
