Yellow fever jab on Bolivia/? border.
 

Anyone got any up to date info on yellow fever requirements and price in this area. Reason I ask is mine runs out middle of next year and renewing it in the UK costs a lot of beer coupons, so maybe getting a new one in or around Bolivia where I will be soon would be the financial thing to do. we passed only a month or so ago, didn´t get asked for nada only bike stuff, on the other hand it pays to cross "quiet" boarder posts in the middle of the day so hopefully there are some other people around. The officials leave alot to be desired!

In 'Clinica Alemana' in Santiago, Chile, you can get whatever jab you want.

"You won't need it" is not correct. With the amount Mike travels, he will need it sooner or later, whether at the Bolivia border (where most, but not all, travelers get away without being asked) or elsewhere.

Mike I don't have specific information for you, but I'd sure hate to see something as minor as a vaccination for a deadly disease interfere with your beer consumption. I'd look to clinics in either Chile (best) or Argentina for your jab. I'd place Bolivia in a distant second place, and the thought of "at the border" makes my blood run cold.

just how prevelant is Yellow Fever, what are the incidences of infection?

As a soon to be travelling thru the Americas rider, (departing Kamloops BC Dec 2, for 3+ months) who due to medical interactions, (addisons disease) cannot take the jab in the arm, anywhere anytime, how major of a concern should this be? I will be travelling with a stamped official "no can do" letter in my immunization passport, in both languages. (englise en espano)

The fever ares are at least majority restricted to the lower elevations, the actual yellow fever areas relatively small, (if not travelling in the amazonias). Can Deet based products, long sleeves/pants/nets/really big swatter, be comfortably relied on for protection. More to the point, would a moto-rider traveller be nuts to take the chance?

As of about a month ago here is the word from the Bolivia/Brazil border ref. Yellow fever certificates, ¿Que? I had spent a week bird watching and tripping over caiman and capybaras in the Pantanal national park before crossing the border into Bolivia from Brazil at Corumba/Arroyo Conception and at neither border posts was I asked for the YF certificate. I queried this and basically the answer was that officially it is a requirement but as most of the locals do not have a certificate because a). The occasional outbreaks tend to be very localized and b). The jab is expensive, demanding to see one before allowing exist/entry during the daily commute or evening wander over for some cheap beers would create mayhem. Just in passing, yes, the Pantanal is worth a visit but on the Brazilian side it is being abused by the burning off of scrub land whilst the river is used by absolutely massive blocks of ore carrying barges, 5 long by 5 wide being pushed by the biggest motor unit I have ever seen. If you do decide to go I would seriously consider seeking out tour companies on the Bolivian side of the river, they are a lot cheaper and still eager to please. Ride safe.
p.s. I got mine before leaving Scotland, 60 pounds but the jabber was pretty.

I had my 2nd set of shots (booster?) in La Paz after having the initial ones in the US prior to leaving. The Embassy there recommended places in La Paz and Cochabamba and both places were fast, easy and cheap. I keep my shot cards up to date just because I travel and some countries require it.

Second set of what shots in particular? Yellow fever shot needs no booster for ten years (and research suggests a single shot is good for much longer than that).

Some countries require yellow fever. Occasionally a country requires cholera, but it's rare. Anything else ever required of anyone, anywhere?

has anyone out there crossed into an area that requires the shot. but is travelling with a letter (and immunization passport) that states the shot cannot be taken. This is very much a case of the medicine being worse that the illness. thx.

Preventive better than cure. Much truth to that. When I enter Bolivia early this year no one asked about Yellow fever vac be it at the border, city, police post or wherever. But, my experience strongly urged me to get the vaccination before start of my journey. It last for 10 years and quite cheap here (in my country). Get it soon because its good for you.

Yellow fever shots required
 

We were stopped by police when leaving Brazil into Paraguay @8 months ago and asked to produce our yellow fever certificates. Also, when we return to Australia DFAT have warned us that we will not be allowed back in if we have travelled through yellow fever areas and do not have current vaccination certificates. My advice? Take the shots, put it down as the necessary cost of adventure. It will save hassles from authorities on the road and at home. Enjoy your journey

I would be all over taking the shots, but the risk of contracting the disease pales to the death induced in taking the jab. Which is why I was concerned over the prospect of doing the journey through those areas in the first place, as in am I being foolish and doing something that my mother would highly disaprove of. Two Addisons patients (brothers) both died after taking the Y. Fever shot. a pretty good reason for me not to get it.
