Medical insurance world wide for motorbikers
 

Hi All,
I am currently in Zambia continuing a round the world trip on a BMW 1200GSA. I left a while ago but my medical insurance is about to end. Does anyone know of a company that will give world wide medical cover for bikers riding over 125cc please...???
(For your information if you get a bank account with LLoyds they give great travel cover for 185.00 pounds for maximum 9 months but mine has run out and they will not renew it while I am still abroad).

It may be worth trying the post office. You can do it online, they insure riders of bikes over 125cc, they are not too expensive, and given that they are the post office I feel pretty safe about using them.

They are UK based and will insure you. I've used them for my trip. Look around the website and email them. Friendly helpful people. As far as I know they are one of the few companies who will insure for a big motorbike.

Enjoy the trip I've just got back from my year (I was in Southern Africa earlier this year) and really really miss it. Domestic life just seems dull:thumbdown:

I also used Navigator for insurance on my Africa trip, after recommendations on here. They are indeed a friendly and helpful company to deal with as others have said.

One thing I've never thought about before with insurance though is looking at who you deal with if you have to make a claim. Because if you're insured with Navigator and have the misfortune to have to make a claim it won't be them who you deal with, so for me that kind of negates the value of having a friendly insurance company.

Fortunately I haven't had to submit a medical claim, it's for theft. I had seperate insurance for my camera gear with a company called JTL. They have settled my claim and replaced my camera a couple of weeks ago, but the company who deal with claims for Navigator (White Horse, part of Thomas Cook) haven't even looked at my claim yet. Both claims were submitted at the same time and White Horse say they take 3 weeks, but when you phone them they say "sorry we're really busy so claims are taking longer than usual".

As my claim is for theft it's not a huge problem to wait a bit longer, but I'd like to know if anyone's had to claim for medical problems when insured by Navigator and if they've had similar problems. This would obviously be much more serious.

I'll be very interested to hear if anybody has been able to re-insure with another company once they are already on the road. We were unable to find any such company earlier this year and this and various other factors including not being able to get visas for Pakistan outside our home country made us decide to come home and finish the journey another time.

it's a UK-based insurance for expats. I contacted them when I was in SE-Asia and was insured there for several years. Premiums are o.k. (about €1100 per year, age 40+) if you agree to a deductible and get worldwide insurance cover ex USA. If you need cover for USA (and maybe Canada), premiums will triple. Although they seem to have a smaller extra charge for trips of up to 3 months to North America.

That's why I changed to German insurer Ergo. Roughly same premium per year, no deductible, includes North America.

Not sure what their policy is with riding motorbikes, but on a backpacking trip a few years ago I re-insured with World Nomads whilst in SE Asia. Very easy to do just by logging into your account on their website.

My last trip by 4x4 through Africa I used Navigator. I have a UK passport, so got UK insurance, but was living in Australia before I went to Africa. Most companies want you to be in your 'home' country to start the insurance, but Navigator were happy to start it with me in Aus so I imagine they'd also extend on the road. I had to speak with them over the phone to organise it, but not really any hassle.

It's a dutch company with worldwide coverage and it can be extend till four years of traveling. I'm not sure with with a e-mail you will have the answer soon enough.

The critical things to tell any insurance company right at the beginning before you waste time answering all their questions is

A) you are travelling on your own motorcycle (ie not a hire bike) and that it is over 125cc

B) you are already away from your home country.

Insurance companies always look for ways to deny claims - so you might as well tell them the truth (or be in a country where you can bribe everybody to lie about why you are in hospital..... and can forge air tickets..... only joking!) We tried World Nomads and Navigator but no good for us. I think we were too old (!) for Navigator....

We pay $ 350,- for two persons for four months.

Searched far and wide for insurance....Bike over 125...Me over 65....trip over a month.....I found it really difficult to get 3 out of 3....but have just had a decent quote and some good advice from

World Nomads - Keep Travelling Safely

I have no affiliation with the company, but it has been recommended to me.

We got insurance with World Nomads. 5 months and then renewed on the road for other 5 months in case anything went wrong, since there is no reimbursement if trip ended earlier (downside, anything happening in first police won't be covered in the 2nd one). Started by car, they said it was ok. Later rented bikes, they said ok. Rented van, ok as well. Anyway, confirm for long trips on big bikes.

It was quite expensive (the undersigning insurance company behind is Buppa), mentioned before, but reviews in case of accident/disease where great, and that is what counted for us. We found terrible reviews for other, so watch out.

We had to use it only once in NZ. Looked like something really serious (sudden stroke), but ended up being nothing (well, till now). Called BUPPA them and they immediately sent a fax stating "will cover all expenses, no limit; only 1 condition: pls send us all reports and if the patient has to stay longer than 3 days in hospital, we would like one of our doctors to talk with your staff".

Absolutely amazing (multilingual) service on the phone, quick, attentive (called us several times), paid well back everything (hospital wanted to be paid by us). Strongly recommended, but next time would try directly with Buppa. We had read of people taken by helicopter from Nepal, then by plane to BKK. We believe it now (and we are not paid by them!).
