Medical Insurance?
Hello!

I will be travelling throughout Africa by
car.
And I thought of getting a Medical Insurance
just in case!
But will it be worth it, I mean what is the health service like down there in Africa?
Will I be fully covered if anything happens and require hospital treatments or need to be evacuated?
Does anyone know of a good Insurance company
in London(UK) with cheap prices?

Many people travel without insurance. However, I saved a lot of money by having insurance. If you are in an accident that will require any medical treatment in a developed country insurance is a must. My two surguries for a seriously fractured collar bone would have cost me my whole budget for my trip or more.
I can't say about a life-threatening accident, but any serious injury will cost you a lot of money if uninsured. Some travel insurance plans have tie-ups with local hospitals that will allow you to be treated without having to pay the hospital and be reimbursed by the insurance company.

I married a friend of mine just for medical insurance. She's got a good job (as a nurse at the same hospital Bullitt was filmed at) and now I'm covered under her. My girlfriend (at that time), and her boyfriend, were at the wedding. It was a very nice thing for her to do and if she's lucky, I'll get creamed by a car and the insurance will pay off her apartment.

Medical insurance in the US would cost me about $300/month and without a job, I can't afford it. I'm epileptic so the pre-existing condition makes it go up.

I thought people in civilized countries had health care for free. Did Blair take it away from you?

I'll sign up with Medjet when I leave Japan heading towards Italy. They'll cover me and will fly me back to the States if something bad happens. They're on the Medical Insurance link over to the left but I don't know what countries they cover.

I thought national health care would cover overseas costs for most things but that's something that won't happen in my life time.

My "wife" works at a hospital which is involved with Medicines Sans Frontiers. She volunteers for that so maybe you met her in Guatemala. Bleach blonde punk rock nurse from San Francisco via Louisiana. Which means her hospital has health care that covers overseas expenses.

Plank? Not septic?

Alright Dave, I'd like to meet your 'missus', she sounds like a right game girl! Seriously, I do have a contact or two in Guat. but maybe you could pass on my e mail to her. I am still on the road, Colombia tomorrow, I would really like to see what MSF do there.

The 'plank' reference was to a short, wooden thick thing, not rhymeing, but all in jest nevertheless.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
