Buy at home. Take them with you. You won't save substantially buying enroute, and the likelihood of ending up with out of date, mis-stored and/or counterfeit medication would be greater.

That said, go to Lonelyplanet.com/thorntree, find the "Health" branch of the forum and look for posts about malaria. There are hundreds of threads. In particular, pay attention to the most reliable poster there, Nutraxfornerves. She's reliable, balanced, knows her stuff and doesn't fall prey to silly sensationalism.

Note that chloroquine is probably not a good choice for parts of Latin America. Make an informed choice.

Hope that helps.

Mark

The site I keep telling people to go to is linked to the NHS site where doctors in the UK go for their advice. Malaria, as most people know is a killer, and it can come on very rapidly. You should not mess about with it but the site I keep telling people to go to is run by UK doctors and is pretty good.

Best and most easily understood info I have found on Malaria is here: Malaria Information Page - The Travel Doctor

Antimalarials in Bolivia

We bought a stash of antimalarials in Centro Epidemiologico in La Paz, Bolivia. It was mefloquine-based Mefliam (that you take once a week), produced in India, and dirt cheap. Don't know about the conditions they were keeping them in, or if they might have been copies, but they weren't overdue for sure. Anyway, we used them throughout Colombia and Central America and did not fall ill.

Be aware that some people (me for one!) are allergic to Malaria meds = Horror type trips, loose bowels etc... not fun!
Take time to follow the instructions and start the meds well before you travel so you find out if you "trip" before your trip as it were!
Malerone affected me, but in a lesser fashion. I ended up not using anything but carried a product called "Halfan" which came recommended as a quick reaction 12x hour massive "De-tox" type of treatment. I had no need to try it out as I stayed in mostly high altitude areas where the Mossies never seem go (Hint!) it appears that they (Mossies) are scared of high winds, and heights! Two weeks in India/Nepal, and many trips to Kenya and one trip to SA and no probs so far..beware swamps, be switched on to the risk and you should be ok. "Enjoy the travel, focus on the fun not the risks"

Think you are talking about different issues. One, drugs to prevent, and two, drugs to relief. To prevent, best buying 1º World. To relief, best 3º,4º or 5º one.
