How to maintain cognitive function in older age

Hi guys

motorbike riders are getting older, and we need to maintain our ability to detect danger, react quickly, and exert control in difficult situations. The good news is that aerobic training can do just that.

In fact, as posted on my blog, there is now lots of scientific evidence that aerobic training not only increases physical stamina. It also improves cognitive function. This effect is particularly evident in older subjects.

One more reason to keep fit

Cheers

Sam

Well, as I drift, one year at a time, further into the danger zone I can't say I've noticed any cognitive decline - but then again I don't suppose I would. It's usually others that see we've gone from :smartass: to :confused1:.

The one thing I have noticed though is that aerobic exercise gets harder and harder as the years go by and you need to have some very strong underlying motivational reason to keep at it. Almost all of the reasons that worked when you were 20 (playing competitive sport, attract opposite sex etc) are pretty much irrelevant by 60 for many people and you have the additional worry that stressing your body during an aerobic workout might precipitate some catastrophic event.

Many people of mature years might weigh up the advantages of "modest improvements in attention and processing speed, executive function, and memory" to be gained by going out exercising on a cold, wet, winter's night and decide that they'll take advantages offered by a beer and a curry instead.

Here I am, 70+ wending my weary way through South America and I can't think of a snappy retort. Must be the lack of curry. Ride safe.

So sorry I'll not try a dead language yet, not that far gone :innocent:

There are people who are fit at the age of 90+, how can I tell - they ride their bicycles for fun...

Humm... I have not had a curry in a long while ... time for another one then.

A 30-year Adventure Cycling Association member and donor, Bill Grun, replied to an email donation reminder I sent last week.

Bill writes: "Good news (about the new Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route and the updated routes and maps at Adventure Cycling Association). I will be 90 next month and have a hard time waiting for warmer weather. I need 50 degrees to bike. Hope to do 1,000 miles again this summer. Mostly I bike alone since folks my age feel that they are too old to bike."

Staying Healthy on the Road

I'm 66 yo and cycle (randoneuring) to keep me on the motorcycle. Keeps me neck and back right. Also good for endurance. Hard for me because I'm so, so lazy. Still, it keeps me riding......

Sport in general is always a great way to keep up with time and mental challenge such as interest in many things and life in general should be enough to keep your brain away from turning to yogourt, I practice aikido and I can tell you by expreience that guys over 60 are in top shape if they want to keep exercising , as far as riding ,I was part of an off road club and few riders over 60 were way faster and creasier than many of us young chiken.( maybe they have nothing to loose :)
