Eating and drinking on the road

Just wondering if anyone else has any ideas they'd like to share about their food regimens while travelling.

We found it very difficult to get 'healthy' foods in the developing countries. You can't safely eat raw fruits or vegetables or salads without soaking them in a bleach solution first, which is not too appetizing.

Are there special foods you swear by? Dairy products, including yogurt, were off our list, but we did find a wonderful full-fat milk powder which comes from NZ in sealed foil pouches, and which can be mixed with treated water to make excellent milk.

Do you take vitamins, if so, which ones? We always took at least a multi-vitamin and Vitamin C, but found it difficult to get Vitamin C in swallowable tablets in South America. They prefer chewable or effervescent tablets.

Maybe not exactly eating and drinking on the road - more swimming! I've spent a good few years canoeing in variouse countries inc. South America and Asia. Something I've learnt is Coca cola is good stuff for killing any nasties you might swallow while in the water. I'm not a big fan of the company (crap policies and exploition - my opinion)but whatever they put in the stuff seems to work. That said, if proper food/drink cleaning stuff is available go with that first. Coke is a 'if it's handy' kind of thing.

Instead of Coke, I used whisky. I don't know whether its efficiency was all sujective but I spent 3 weeks deep in Zambia without problems. I gargled with a big glass of the local production everytime I dined out. I didn't spit it like some mouth wash, of course: I swallowed it all to kill the bugs down there.

I also had a small antibacterial spray and some towelettes, and always used one or the other to wash my hands before eating or smoking.

Industrial cheese was ok but I avoided other dairy products. For fruits, I tried to stick to those I could peel (oranges, bananas etc...)

Always wash the water carefully before you drink it. The old saying "Travel broadens the mind" is inaccurate. The truth is, travel opens the bowels.

What exactly is sourdough starter and where does one get it in US, South America?
Thanks
PS I'm leaving for Argentina in 12 days!
