Do you need good shoulder strength for going off road?

The reason I ask is that I plan to take my 600 Transalp across Salisbury plane at some point but my right shoulder is still fairly weak and unstable since the bike accident in June and it cant take a lot a weight or pulling through it but its ok for everyday commute to work on the road.

Stand up, weight back and don't hold the bars too tight, give it some gas if you feel your tyres slip or dip. The only time you might need strength is to pick the pick up, but this is more technique and can be taught. At one HU meet, they got a very petite lady to lift her bike back up, so most people should be able to manage. IMHO you don't need strength, anyone can ride off road.

Iain.

It really depends on what kind of riding you will do. A lot of the Byways on the Plain can be ridden on a road bike or driven in a normal car. The only issue might be that if you dump the bike, would you aggravate your injury.

Gentle trail-riding is really quite passive; you sit on the bike and toddle about. It's a different situation if you are hooning about, climbing over obstacles or bullying the bike to change direction.

The best way to exercise the muscles you will need is to ride off-road.

As Iain wrote, picking the bike up is as much about technique as it is strength. I have seen big, strong blokes struggle to pick up little bikes.

I would continue to work hard on the shoulder.
