The expire date for the tabs is July 2013

I would counsel anyone against buying secondhand medication as the conditions of storage will likely have rendered them less than effective.

Supplying prescription only medication without a license to do so is illegal for very good reasons.

ALthough I don't need any right now, I often buy Malarone this way from people I believe trustworthy, mainly because otherwise it costs me US$8 per day or so. Expiration date and storage conditions are the key.

Not that I would ever consider doing anything illegal. Ever. Under any circumstances.

The problem is the temperature the tablets are exposed to - often it is not possible to maintain them under the maximum allowable and they can degrade.

The risk with supply is to the seller rather than the buyer in the UK. I should imagine in the states that the risk is more that someone would sue you if they used the tablets and problems ensued, so again the seller is at risk.

Doc, I understand all that. On the other hand, my concern, oddly enough, is about the risk to me from medications which are expired or have been degraded by exposure to heat, light, air, or other chemicals. I have absolutely no interest in getting malaria again. Sellers can fend for themselves.

Roger that Mark, but if you want the best chance of avoiding malaria, and it is only a chance, whatever you do, buy your meds in US or Canada.

It's all about the nebulous intersection of cost and benefit. Your way, Doc, is just one of an infinite variety....and it appears a tad North America-centric at that. Malarone is a British product, although it might be locally produced in the States.

And now that we've conspired to give this thread far more exposure than it ever could have received on its own, I'll bow out.

enjoy,

Mark

The guy is selling something which is useful if travelling to malaria areas of the world. If you don't want to buy it, fine. Please don't voice your opinion in this public forum on why somebody shouldn't buy it. It is, as with many things in the world, their business to decide what's good for them, or not.

When you're selling your BMW you wouldn't appreciate somebody writing in your For Sale Ad that the ring antenna might be faulty (what is a ring antenna anyway? ) and hence we shouldn't buy the bike. Or the ickey mod on a KLR can fail... or the water pump mechanical seal on a DRZ is dodgy.

Basically don't sabotage somebody else's advert.

cheers

Interesting.

I made a reply to Brighty's post that has now been deleted.

I had commented on the fact that selling second-hand medicines could cost someone their life (and told him to mind his own business).

I'm disappointed at the censorship and stifling of debate which is appearing to put commercial gain ahead of some-one's well-being.

So, Grant - did you delete that post, or was it Chris?

Very poor.

It wasn't me, so I assume Chris - I never saw the post. However, I think your point has been well and truly made, and we're all adults here who are capable of making these choices, especially if they have been pointed out as you already did as something to think about - and that's enough. The endless debate on the subject is NOT necessary.

There is no "commercial gain" consideration here at all. Chris's comments are well made and I agree completely with the basics. A health warning is a little different than a ring antenna comment, but as I said - your point has now been made.

It's up to potential purchasers to make a decision whether to buy or not based on their own risk assessment of the possible pitfalls of buying pre-owned medicine. I know that if someone bought medicine from me it would be safe, as I would have looked after it as if I was going to use it - and if there was any doubt in my mind about it's efficacy I'd bin it, not sell it. And I'd be VERY happy buying medicine in most of the world, not just the USA and Canada. Especially anti-malaria's, as they are most likely to be exactly the right stuff in the country you're going to use them in - they're also likely to be fresher.

As for the legality of selling prescription meds, you're right he shouldn't be doing it. And information about where the trip was to would be useful - if it was a year in the Sahara and a month in the tropics, then maybe they're not a good idea to buy.

Can we move on now?

That would be me. This thread had been bought to my attention, and as I figured that everyone had really stated their position, nothing positive would be gained by your last post. Mark had politely withdrawn, Chris had stated his opinion so I removed your "mind your own business" post as being somewhat at odds with this being a public forum.

I'm locking this thread, but Grant may see fit to change that.

Regards

Nigel in NZ
