Someone please correct me, if this is outdated or just plain wrong... but I´m under the impression, that India and China/Tibet do not have any international border crossings between them. I also remember reading something like foreigners are not even allowed to go near this border area without special permits. KKH or Nepal may be your only options in case you´re not willing to ship your vehicle onwards. But do read more from this forum & others about getting your vehicle into China, as it seems pretty complicated.

Hi mate , Ollie and Jenny came through China so they may be able to help, I don't have a number for them now they're in Aus but try Jenny and Ollie's Big Trip, plus if you go that route you can do the KKH

Quote:
There is NO international border crossing between China and India. A very small amount of Indian pilgrims (on foot only) are allowed to cross to Tibet each year to visit a holy mountain and lake up there (holy to both Buddhists and Hindus). There are only 2 "international" border crossings in the entire Himalayan range ... the KKH linking China (Xinjiang) and Pakistan and the Friendship Bridge between China (Tibet) and Nepal. And you said you didnt want to go back to KKH, so that leaves Nepal. Most of the China-India border is not even agreed, so that makes it pretty hard to have a shared border post there. Good luck getting the Chinese to let you into Tibet! It wont be cheap.

There is a crossing from Sikkim into Tibet across the Nathu La pass; unfortunately (at the moment) it is not open to foreigners. Indians can go up to the pass with a special permit, and I believe some traders can cross the border itself. As the Chinese and Indian governments aren't the best of friends, it isn't possible for foreigners to cross in such a sensitive area; but in the future, who knows? Sorry, I know this doesn't really help you.

Nepal - China - Laos
Mark,
I have been in touch with several operators in china reserching this, and have posted the information up on previous threads.. but they are down the list now. Anyway.. it is possible, I am waiting for one more quote to come through but i am sorry to say that i don't have much hope in it being a lot less than the others.. (£14,000 & £6500) but this is for 2 motorbikes and 3 people for 20 days. The problem being that because we where on motorbikes we have to pay for a driver & vehcile to laos, and back again. (if you forward an email address i will send it all to you) The good news is that if you have a spare seat for the guides it appears to be perfectly acceptable and the costs will go down. for routes that are definatly possible look at the dragoman website as they run european plated vehicles, with european drivers, local guides, camp etc. If they can do it so can you. If you are thinking of going and can cope with doing the motorbike route, i would be very interested in tagging along, otherwise i'm going to have to fly the bike & me Currently in northern india chilling around. Andy |
