where to get into China without border post?

Hi!

is there a border crossing into China, where you can ride into the country for a few Kilometers without doing the offical paperwork?
I once read about such a place, but I´ve forgotten, where it is. Most likely it was somewhere in the Himalaya.

Oi, Panny,

You really don't want to do that.
Seriously, not a good idea.
I would have thought far too risky.

Maybe it was actually Burma, where some years ago you could (or at least a few travellers could!) ride a few miles into the country from the northernmost Thai crossing?

Hi uk_vette,

you misunderstood me.
I´m talking about a border where the border post with the officals is not located at the border itself but many kilometers further into China. Nothing unusal. Situations like this exist in many countries.
Thereby you can formally ride into the country for a moment without having to do the paperwork. You understand what I mean?

I´m not talking about sneaking into China for a longer stay.

Cheers

That was 1997 .Things have changed since then for a start China's relationship with Pakistan is not great at the moment especially in Xinjiang.

Hi Panny,

long time, no talk! :)

You can't do that any more: when I visited in 2007 a fence with gate had been built and the guards on the Pak side wouldn't even let us ride to the border marker for the obligatory pic. We had to walk there.
