Insurance in Indonesia

Our bike is being air freighted in to Indonesia. Are there any insurance requirements or options for Indonesia? I haven't been able to find any info about it.

No insurance requirement that I know off, police are interested in your international drivers license and bike registration papers.

Be aware that due to lack of insurance, most accidents are hit and run (if you can). Be quick and prevent other party from taking off and let negotiations start

For local Indonesians, Third Party vehicle insurance is included through a levy in the vehicle registration fee called "Samsat".

I’ve never heard of any foreign traveller in Indonesia having a problem with the police for lack of insurance. No bike paperwork (registration & carnet), or international driving permit, or helmet etc. YES .. but lack of insurance... no.

The only insurance policies that you should be most concerned about are your travel insurance, and life insurance coverage. Read the small print of your travel policy and make sure that your covered to ride big displacement bikes overseas .. and the beneficiary(ies) is/are up-to-date on your life insurance. Also that your premiums are fully paid .. and then carry on.

I once got stopped with my DL650 in Bali, the police was checking every scooter, and once they realised I had foreign plates, they went through all my papers (glad I had the carnet with me at that time!) ... after about 20 minutes they let me go, no mention of insurance, which the bike did not have. This was in 2008.

Just remember, that when you do like this, you risk paying all damage to everybody else out of your own wallet, if you are involved in an accident. (But even if you HAD some sort of ´insurance´ for this country, there´s no guarantee that it would help you out much!)

That´s really something to think about before you decide to do a trip like this.

In case you´re bringing the bike in via Jakarta, don´t mean to scare you, but I met a German biker, who had had his bike stuck there for weeks. WITH CARNET!! He was in Bali trying to cool his nerves a bit at that time, don´t know how that story ended. So hoping it´ll be easier for you!

How did you go airfreighting in? Any hassles with customs or paperwork?

I am hoping to do the same - going into Denpasar early in 2012

The paperwork and customs process was complex and required visiting many different offices around the airport, getting stamps and signatures, etc...
Some local fixer adopted (not for free mind you) us near the beginning and he walked all the paperwork through. We arrived at like 3pm on a Friday and ended up picking the bike up on Saturday morning. It may have taken days by ourselves.

check this insurance company, it has low plans with lots of benefits. When it comes with quality it has the best service.
