vietnam holiday bottom to top
 

hi we are a couple from australia landing in
ho chi minh city around the 20th of august and hope to hire 2 motorcycles and ride to the top of vietnam within 3 weeks. our questions are:

1. what type of bikes do people suggest for such a trip? and where in ho chi minh do we hire them? what are the rough prices?
2. is 3 weeks enought time?
3. can we put the motorbikes on the same train with us to get them back to ho chi minh city?
4. what route would you suggest to take?
5. anyone else doing similar trip at same time it would be good to meet and ride some of the distance together.

any help for all or some of our questions it would be appreciated. cheers lance

howdy, don't have much info as i'm waiting on some responses to a similar posting...looks like the bike to get is the minsk (russian built), and there is a minsk club of vietnam website (www.minskclubvietnam.com)...we're looking to do hanoi south to HCMC early august, right before you...we'll probably buy a used one and then sell/give away...good luck!

Chuong's Motorbike Adventure in Hanoi is a safe bet and a favourite among foreigners. They are cheap too. I bought a Minsk with a buy-back guarantee (I think I paid approx. US$ 500). The Minsk is a good choice because it can be repaired everywhere while the more modern bikes can't. Chuong borrowed me a tool kit and spare parts, and I drove the green little Russian rocket with no problems whatsoever from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh where Chuong's brother showed up at my guesthouse, paid me back almost the full amount, and that's that. Great service. If the desire is to drive the other way then Chuong can send the bikes to his brother in HCMC, then you drive them back to Hanoi. Three weeks are fine.

Just a tip: Bring your own helmet.

Hi...i am looking to Hire from the said man in hanoi a couple of weeks before hand and end up in Ho Chi Minh around the 20th. Maybe we can cut some costs in shipping the bike one way?
