Transport Motorcycles from Vietnam to Russia
 

We - 2 motorbikers - want to go from Vietnam to China, Mongolia, Russia in March/April 2009. We have heard that it is difficult to get through China. What possibilities are there to transport the motorbikes from Vietnam to Russia - by ship, by plane, by train ?

Wally, I also wanted to do the same thing in April 2008.

Are you in Vietnam at present? If not, then you will find it difficult to either take your bike into Vietnam (or buy a bike in Vietnam) and even more difficult to get it out of Vietnam and into China. Sorry, I can't help with shipping info from Vietnam to Russia.

I ended up doing the following.

1. Shipped my bike from Australia to Busan Korea.
2. Flew to Ho Chi Minh City, rented a bike and rode around Southern Vietnam. Took bus to Chinese border.
3. Bought new Chinese bike (Haobon 125) in Qinzhou China (40km from Vietnam border) and rode around China and up t Mongolian border.
4. After struggling to take Haobon out of China and into Mongolia, ended up taking a return train journey to Ulan Bataar.
5. Rode Haobon down to Shanghai, sold it and flew to Busan.
6. Collected bike and rode to Sokcho and took ferry to Zarubino (Vladivostok)
7. Rode from Vladivostok to europe and shipped bike back to Australia from Italy.

Hi geierwalli, Hope you have some luck with working out the shipping to Russia. If you do please post a reply here as I might be in the same boat (so to speak) in a month or two.

Are you currently in Vietnam? We've now in Cambodia...

I just emailed John cafe, they just quoted me 4500 euro to do the trip, while i could probably pay it, but $6000 is about 5 years salary for a Chinese person.

It seems we all have a common interest, ie getting across china. For each month I stay in Cambodia, I save about $1,500 per month, perhaps if I can get through china for much less in a group, it would make sense to leave earlier, only problem is cold weather, which means taking many more clothes.

Hi Mick, I am in Bangkok at the moment and open to the idea of heading north. I haven't heard good things regarding larger bikes entering Vietnam and China but am willing to try! My current plan is to ride Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, then ship the bike to Nepal. Hope to see somewhere along the line. My email addy is on my website, link below. Dave.

In almost 8 years in Cambodia, I have never heard of anybody taking a bike into Vietnam. China is doable, but I am seeing that you can pay money up front and still get turned away.

hi dave,
it seems like there is many people in SE asia having the same plan, which is crossing china from laos to nepal or kyrgystan.
maybe we could put a group together and split the costs then?
originally we wanted to cross in april but I'm open for may as well...
