Transport From Bali to West Timor
Does anyone know if it is possible to get yourself and your bike straight from Bali to West Timor and if so any idea on costs? We are currently planning to travel through Indonesia but as we are a bit short on cash and time we are just looking at a backup plan if either start to run out while we are in Sumatra, Java or Bali. Already tried contacting Pelni shipping but they weren't really much help :-/

Hi guys,

I came across Indonesia ther other way using local ferries so don't know for definite but I think Pelni is the only option. I'm sure they do the route you're after but it seems in their enjoyment of a monopoly they don't seem to care whether people can figure out how to sail with them or not.

You say you're short for time and money but as a guide I crossed got from Kupang to Bali in about five days.

It took 18 hours on the ferry to Kupang to Flores, a day and a half to cross Flores, the same to cross Sumbawa as the roads were pretty poor and only half a day to cross Lombok. I was the same as you; short on time and money.

The only thing you have to bear in mind is that between those islands there's ggenerally only one daily ferry that leaves in a morning. But they're cheap. I think about US$3 each, or something like that.

Might be a quicker option than waiting for a Pelni ship and spending two days kooked up on that.

Only thing is check the weather. If it's bad the ferries don't sail. I failed to mention this bit but I had to wait a weeek for the ferry to sail Kupang to Flores.

Thanks for that Nathan, that really helps and sorts of puts our minds at ease a bit (well apart from the bit where you had to wait a week to get across to Flores anyway ). At the moment it is looking more and more likely that we will indeed be island hoping even if it comes at the expense of Bali. And we are both so pleased that there is an alternative to Pelni albeit not advertised that well :-/

We were in Bali in Feb-08, trying to figure out a way to get to Kupang. There was a Pelni line going from Bali to Kupang (not 100% sure, if it goes the other way round, because these may be ships that start off from Jakarta, and do a large loop to several islands before heading back, and not necessarily the same route). Only this Pelni had just sailed a couple of days ago, and the next one was over 3 weeks away.

And like has been said before, the information about Pelni is very hard to get. Their official policy is no motorbikes, but maybe you can negotiate at the harbour (not guaranteed, though).

We actually skipped Timor altogether, because there was fighting in Dili, and no shrimp boats or anything was going from West Timor to Darwin, because of bad weather. The weather I think should be getting better by now.

Pelni refused to carry our bikes.

The 18h trip from Larantuka to Kupang was a very uncomfortable trip. I would advise against doing long ferry trips where you can ride. In any case, riding in Easter Indo is great and the roads aren't too bad, either, with very little traffic and great scenery.

I don't know whey people tend to rush through Indo. We spent almost 6 months there. If only we could have afforded a little better accommodation...

A car ferry (do not mess it up with passenger-only ferries, there are a lot of them around in Indonesia and they do not take any vehicles - only rarely fit couple of 50cc bikes that fit through small passenger door on the ferry - people will suggest you use them but they really have no idea, they do not have bikes so huge) goes from Labuanbajo (westernmost point in Flores) to Kupang once or twice a week if you do not want to ride through Flores. And to get to Flores from Bali, it will take three days, no more, if you do it fast (no sightseeing).

Although I must add Flores is super nice riding - I counted 33 curves per 1 kilometer sometimes . Take anti-malarials there tho, loads of mozzies!









Ride safe, Margus (currently second month in Indonesia and loving it - I only wish we could stay longer but VISAs are starting to run out and extension is officially not possible!)

try to contact the agent im post ... they can help you everywhere you like as long you ship your bike around INDONESIA. i think they relly know how to send by cargo boat (such as pelni), plane, or land (using big truck).

for pelni i only got the information from the website or maybe you can contact directly from the branch when was the boat comming.

my recommend you use the agent because when we (indonesian) has needs to goverment workers, they (goverment workers) used to make us difficult unless we bribe them .... thats why i recommend you to these co.

Margus: fly to KL on a weekday and you can get a new 2-month visa the same day. We spent almost 6 months in Indo.

Artnet: thanks for the info. Luckily, we don't need it any more now. If the sleepless nights in noisy hotels hadn't worn my down we might have gone to Sulawesi as well.

At the moment im looking at making a short trip from lombok to east timor for a visa renewal just for the fun of it.

Does anyone know of (regular) shipping options from Dili to Indonesia? Pulau Alor for example? Seems pretty close on the map....

What about the carnet requirements for Timor, is this also valid for Indonesia registered vehicles or is there a possibility to make a note in your passport for temp import/export?.....

From Dili you can ship to Singapore or Darwin. To anywhere else gets transhipped through there.

For a visa run go to Bali and fly Air Asia to KL. You can get a visa the same day.

There are no ferries out of Timor Leste. There used to be ferries under Indonesian rule. We saw the derelict terminals.

margus, i just got a one month extension on my b211 visa. in ambon
i had a friend go with me, they took the application and i returned in 2 days. paid 250000 pl;us 6000 for a stamp and i was photographed AND fingerprinted and they said i could get another 4 extensions for a total of 6 months.
try it at a kantor imigrasi in any city you are in

I was also told by some expats in Bali, that you could extend the visa without leaving the country. But at a cost of something like 200-300 USD for 1 more month, and I dont know, how legal it would´ve been.
