THAILAND - Travel advice (safety)
 

I see that Thailand government has imposed a state of emergency within BANGKOK and surrounding provinces. :(

I have booked flights to Thailand on Friday 22 February 2014 returning one month later on Friday 22 March 2014. :helpsmilie:

The UK FCO travel advice remains - stay away from the protests in Bangkok but travel elsewhere is SAFE.

I presume this will not effect our travel insurance? Providing we make reasonable adjustments to stay away from the affected areas?

We are booked for 3 nights at the Livingstone Lodge in Sukhkumvit Bangkok. I understand that the route MAY be affected from the main airport.

Providing we make REASONABLE adjustments, our travel insurance will remain effective in all respects. Wonder what might happen if we suddenly hit a temporary road closure?

My understanding is that Western tourists remain safe even in the affected areas? The protesters have no problem with foreigners. :innocent:

My past experience of the friendly peace loving people of Thailand is that they will always go out of their way to welcome protect visitors like us. bier

Sad to see that some innocent (peaceful) protesters have been murdered by their fellow countrymen. :eek3:

If the FCO travel advice changes I presume my travel insurance will cover abandonment because I booked the flights and paid for travel insurance BEFORE the advice changed? I would hate to lose £1,000....

I was in BKK a few months ago and saw the protests. They were very peaceful then. Not even any cops around. Since then, things have changed. Right now I am in Cambodia and end of Feb/start of March I'll be going into Northern Thailand then riding south.

The election is supposed to take place in a few days on the 2nd and the government has deployed 10,000 police to make sure the protesters do not block it. The protesters have said they will boycott the election. If something major will happen, it will probably happen on the 2nd or close after.

So.. truth be told, I have no idea what will happen. Some of my friends in Thailand say even if something does happen, it will be very limited. Other people I have talked to in Vietnam and Cambodia thing something huge is on the way. I'll be watching the news in the next few days. By the time you are going to be in BKK you will know if it is safe, or if it is not safe. I wish I could be more help. I know if I do go back to Thailand, I will avoid BKK.
