Thailand, extending vehicle entry permit
I rode in to Thailand from Malaysia a few days ago and they gave my bike an entry permit of some sort good for 30 days. It mentions some super duper whopping fine (like USD 20,000) for overstaying. I REALLY want to make it to the HU meeting in Chiang Mai in mid Jan so need to get this extended at least 3 weeks. Anyone have any info on how to extend the Thai vehicle entry permit or what the real consequences are for overstaying?

Overstays are not indulged in Thailand much anymore. A day or so will be just a fine but much longer than that and you'll find yourself having a hard time getting a new Visa, next time.
Check Gt-rider.com and ThaiVisa.com but . . . normally, you have 180 days on a vehicle MAXIMUM. Go back to the Customs office that gave you the original paperwork and tell them what you have in mind. Make it a "problem to be solved" with low, steady voice and no reactions facially or in tone or volume and see why so many expats (me, included) call it the LOS (Land of Smiles). Just to be clear, my Visa situation is fine (I'll fly out and back in to renew it), it's just the vehicle import thing. Going back the ingress point is extremely undesirable. And when I do leave I won't exit through there anyway (will be boat cargo). Hmmmm...
I'll check out GT rider. I could drive out and back in at Cambodia or something but it's quite a bit of time wasted. Anyone else have experience with this? |
TIP Extension.
Hi Bokad, I got an extension on my Temporary Import Papers at the Chiang Mai Customs Office about 2 years ago. No problems at all, it took about 45 minutes, the guys are very friendly and helpful, they prefer it if you go in with about 7 days left on your papers.

Recently some friends of ours got a 30 day extension on their truck papers at Ranong Immigration, if you are still south of this point it's worth a try. If you need to renew your own visa rather than the immigration in the centre of Ranong which is good for your bike, go to the Andaman Club which is about 10 kms north of the town for an easy boat ride, cost including Burmese visa 850 Baht, obviously only 15 days if you don't have a tourist or O visa. Plus using Highway 4 from the south is a much better route to take than the alternative route which is shorter but a very bad road with not much scenery. |

I entered today from Malaysia. My Visa is for 60 days but I'm not sure how long of it I will stay. Just checked my import paper (PC-print). Date of entry: 02-12-2555 Date for re-export: 31-12-2555 Does that mean I have180 or only 30 days? So when will Ihave to pay those 1'200'000 Bath? **** do I have to drive there again?doh Checked also the CDP: Again, 2-12-2555 ,but this time it's a manual stamp not a PC-problem. Its really not a problem! We had the exact same issue (twice!) as our visas were for 60 days each time, but we were only given 30 days for the bikes. You can plead, ask sweetly, and beg, but they will not give you 60 days. However before your 30 days are up just go to any importation (customs) office and get new papers. They will extend them for you quickly and for free. They are well aware of the problem at the larger offices and the smaller ones you just tell them what you need, show them your visa, and get the new papers! No need to leave the country to do so!
If you overstay they will fine you. And if your expiry date is on a holiday you have to do it before it expires. We did it last year and the second time we were a day late forgetting that the office would be closed on the day it was to expire. (Customs on border crossings are the exception here, but we did it in Chang Mai). The fee is 100 Baht per bike and per day for the first month, and then they slam you with the million baht fine (at least it was as of last year). I've been told they rarely make you pay the million unless you are months over, but really, why take the chance? Rideasia.net can help point you to the nearest customs office. We did one near the border of Burma and the other time in Chang Mai. And sushi, 2555 is 2012! It's funny, they used 2012 in my passport and 2555 in my bike-papers... Well I entered Thailand at Sadao. The next day I went to the border near Satun, since I drove by anyway, and tried to get 60 days. The officers understud what I wanted but they said I have to wait till around 20th of December to extend it. Hope I will have time and find a custom office then. sushi |

I just had our bike entry permit paperwork extended for two months in Phuket.
The office is on Phuket Road in Phuket Town. Phone #076-211105 Office hours: 0830 - 1630 It's a pretty big compound and near the passport/immigration office. Hard to miss. They extended the entry permit with a 24 hour turnaround. Dropped off the paperwork yesterday and picked it up today. Required documentation was passport, insurance, title (Actually I don't remember if they asked for this or not), and the original entry document. They want a copy of your passport photo/info page and the Thailand entry visa page. They were able to make the copy there, some offices maybe not. No fee. They were quite helpful and famililar with the process. I extended 3 weeks in advance. Technically they are only supposed to make the extension for as long as your visa is good for but they put mine several months later without problem. Also my update: I went today to the border Mae Sot / Myanmar. Google maps Customoffice: 16.692175,98.519586 It took 30 minutes. They made copys of my passport/visa and the original paper. I had to fill out a form with my data and the bike data which was in thai, but they showed me an old paper from an other traveller so it was easy. They wrote something in thai on the back of the original paper with a new date and official stamp. That's it. Meanwhile the chief officer offered me fruits and even tried to talk me into marry the female officer on duty, since she is still single. One must love Thailand.:thumbup1: Quote:

Just a few km before the border on your left hand side there is a small insuranceshop. You cannot miss it. Fast service, did it twice. Forgot how much but it was really cheap and got 6 month. Do not have the papers with me because motorbike is at home and we are now travelling with a rental car in Thaland. Happy travelling. Metita |
