Thailand border queston
 

Hi Guys,
We are heading to thailand in the next month or so, and we have heard rumors that to get in, as a tempory import you may have to put a deposit of 100% of the value of the bike. Surely this is not correct, I know they dont accept carnets, ad i will have to get a tempory import permit. But can anyone tell me what it actually takes to get in. What paper work is needed, and how much does it cost.

We were there in January and February this year, entering/exiting multiple times. It's fairly straightforward. No Carnet, no deposit, no fees.

If they have internet working, then they just type in your vehicle details and issue the permit which you have to present when leaving. We got the permit for one month, which is supposedly extendable.

We've heard of people having problems entering or exiting when the internet is not working, but they still managed to do it somehow.

Hi X, I have entered Thailand with my bike (F650 with US rider and registration) 5 or 6 times from Burma, Laos and Cambodia. I DO have a carnet though. The Thai border folks know what it is and have always stamped me in and out of the country sans problem. I have never paid any fees entering the country. Hope someone can offer advice on the TIP. H. You only need your rego to enter and the temp import can be extended at any customs office for one month at a time. All this, plus the border restrictions for bikes are in a separate post in this forum.

I entered 3 times in to Thailand and had 3 different results similar to what's been mentioned.

Yes, they do their own "Temporary Vehicle Import" paperwork but not all the time, the hassle there is when you go to exit you don't have this document and it takes say 1/2hr to sort one out on the spot. ( You technically enter and exit the same crossing )

You can't go wrong with a Carnet, they ALL stamped this in and out even if they don't officially accept the document they seem to be stamp-happy people.

My advice is have a Carnet and ask for a Temporary Vehicel Import form if you don't get one don't stress, some borders are really quiet and hardly see anyone.
