tent or not?

Leaving for Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos in 4 weeks time. I'm planning in staying in hotels etc in Asia because they are fairly cheap but was going to bring a tent as backup and for if I continue travelling. Having second thought about taking it now. What's popular opinion? Do I take a tent just in case I need it or leave it here and get it mailed to me if I end up somewhere expensive?

tent

You can buy back packer tents for about £10. the one i have keeps out rain and insects also reptiles. weighs 2.2 kilos. Generally you just need something soft to lie on, rather than expensive bag to lie in,, this of course assumes you not in some cold part of the world or on top of a mountain. I would thake one, plus a small back packers camping gaz stove, but tha t may not be too easy in asia. perhaps a kelly kettle ?? mine can be put up without using pegs in 2-3 minutes. I just tie it to the bike in case a wind gets up . but doubt it would blow away with me in it.

Tent in Asia

Hi!

We would say: Don't carry heavy and voluminous stuff like this. You don't need it, if you stay not to far from the tourist path.
In 3 month motorbike-travelling in the same region your planning we never missed a tent. You always can find cheap accomodation with a really roof ;-))

We carried our tent, and mats, and sleeping-bags and on and on, but only because we are going further. If only southeast Asia: Don't carry it!

cu in BKK???

That pretty much confirms my thinking. I'll leave the tent home and if I travel further and need it get it posted to me or buy a cheap one in Asia somewhere. I'm just bringing a tent fly for now.
Christian and Tanja, when you flew the bike to Malaysia did you have an address to send it too or just to yourself at KLIA? Where'd you get your Malaysian insurance from? I think you'll be long gone from BKK by the time I get there, I'll be spending a couple of months touring Malaysia first then heading north. Happy travelling

Steve

About your questions

Hi Steve!

Unfortunaltely we are gone from southeast asia when you come to BKK. We hope so....
If we are lucky we and the bike fly to Kathmandu end of next week.

About the adress. Yeah, they want to have an adress to contact somebody for the case that your not arrive. So we gave them what they want. We pick up an adress from a motorbike shop, "Sunny Motosikals" through the internet. But it is important to fill your name in the form for the man who is allowed to take the bike!!! Otherwise they will wait for the man from you adress.
It is yust for the form. Fill it out, nobody is really interested in having this.

But,....what do you plan to do in Malaysia? For more than a month? There are much more interesting countries here. Thailand is a great thing, we think.

Anyway, good luck for your transport
