Special Permission to ride solo from Dehli-Leh ?

Hi

I have been told by the India consulate in Sydney that my plan to ride from Dehli- Leh solo (I didn't dare mention my intention to ride on to Srinagar !) is "impossible", and that I need to be in a group, and to get special permission in Dehli.
This seems contrary to everything that I have read in this forum, and in other articles. In any case, I have my visa, and I'm leaving on July 5 for Dehli, but I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Tim

Don't worry. You don't need any special permits to drive to Leh. You need permits to visit Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri etc... Easy to get in Leh.
Srinagar? Even there you don't need permit... You can drive to Leh throughh Srinagar if you want...

That's what I thought...thanks for the feedback.

However, if you want to drive through Spiti (and I recommend this trip, see my web site) you need to get an Inner Line Permit in Rekong Peo. This is a mere formality, but Lonely Planet says you have to get it through an agency, so you have to pay them a little money. I went the other way and got my permit in Kaza without an agency.

Spiti is fantastic, I recommend this route. It will help you to avoid AMS problems in the Sarchu. We got permits in Rekong Peo, it took 2 hrs to get it for 10 people.
