INDIA / MYANMAR / THAILAND without a Carnet?!

In January, I will be registering a Royal Enfield in my name in India and riding through Myanmar to Thailand, with a guided tour group.

Does anyone have experience of exiting India and entering Thailand without a Carnet?
I've been keeping up to date with temporary importing a bike into Thailand and it still seems doable, however I really dont want to have to fork out the cash for a carnet. Can I do this trip without one?

Technically you don't need a carnet for Thailand but I've heard of plenty of people getting asked for theirs anyway. Have you seen the new regulations in Thailand? It may be that you'll need a guided tour there as well if you don't get a permit organised soon

I can't find the reference but here was one thread about a non-Inian buying a car in India and then getting asked some crazy amount for a permit to take it out of India - so much that I think he eventually gave up the idea. Might be different for motorbikes. Can't remember whether the fee was for a formal carnet of just over the top bribery and corruption.

Will you return the bike to India to sell it, or is the intention to ship it somewhere else

The plan would be to sell it to another traveller either in Thailand/Laos/Vietnam. I haven't thought that far ahead yet to be completely honest.

Never done it nor been to India but would like to do something similar in future. Having researched a bit just out of curiosity I did also read about it being very hard as a foreigner to take the motorcycle out of India. Keep us updated

You cannot register an Indian bike (or any other Indian reg vehicle) in your name unless you are a resident. Furthermore, you cannot get a Carnet in your name for an Indian reg vehicle. Sorry, but that's the way it is !

Sounds right. I was going to buy an Indian-reg motorhome a few years ago and I would have had to take out a life insurance policy to establish a fake residency and then pay a heap of bribes to complete the process. The motorhome had been specially licensed to travel into all states of India, but not outside india. Woukd have been a great bargain but the overall shonkyness of the procedures was just too much to be bothered

You can register a Nepali Enfield in to your name then get permission to temp import the bike with a registered Thai tour operator.

It sounds strange to me that someone would like to make a trip to where the major parts of the trip would be with a guide and permits and thus limited freedom and very expensive.

One could rent or buy a bike and make a trip in each of these countries relstively easily - and much cheaper and travel to where you want and stay almot as long as you could get visas...
