selling bike in India or pakistan?
A Dutch team is planning to travel overland to India, and fly back to Europe. Key-words: old bikes and limited time. Anyone knows ho to get rid of bike in India? Import taxes in India are tremendous high, I've heard. Perhaps better to dump them in Pakistan?
Who can provide me with some info on getting rid of the stamp in my passport saying 'entance by vehicle'.
Any experiance or suggestions may help me. Please reply if you've got any idea of leaving the area without problems after importing items of value as a bike.

Hi!

You will need a Carnet de Passage for Iran, Pakistan and India and you will have to deposit a sum (In Germany with the ADAC it's 3000 Euro) as a securtity that you are NOT going to do what you are planing...

You should check exactly with your AA what happens when the bike registered in the Carnet will be stolen, dumped or whatever...
Maybe this will answer your question and show you a way how to get rid of the bike AND get your deposit back.

Once your are in India or Pakistan there might be other ways of getting rid of the bike... these ways will not be the very straight ones ;-)... Money makes the world go round... you just have to find the right people.

Stefan is completely right. At the ANWB you'll have to deposit about 4000 euro for the carnet and without it you won't get any further then Turkey.

However, no one will stamp a "bike-entry" in your pasport.

Maybe the best way it to oficially distroy the bike's... but make sure it's oficially or you will loose the deposit.

Getting rid of your car or bike
Way back in 77, I drove a Morris Oxford from London to India, where details of the car was stamped into the passport from Turkey Iran Pakistan Afghanistan until we got to the Indian Border where they wanted a big deposit to allow us bring the car into India. As the car was worth only a fraction of the deposit and we were told we had to ensure the car was exported we had no option but to return to Lahore in Pakistan and find an obliging local with a clapped out similar car. He duly arranged someone to change number plates, engine plates and provide sufficient $US (twice what we paid in London) and safe passage back to the border to get out of pakistan. We then left the clapped out car in a compound at the Indian side of the border promising to come back to collect it.

I am sure there are similar scams still working today.

Other way around
I'm sure you've thought about it .... buy in India eg Enfield and ride it home ... then sell it / give it away .... leave it in the back of the garage ....

Several stolen 4x4 from here in Belgium have been found in India so I guess there is a way ...

I'm planning the same trip (starting in they Netherlands) and will leave for India at the end of September. I'll drive to Delhi and will fly back. It's not that expensive to ship your bike back. Around 300-400 dollars. They take care of all the paper handling which will take about 5-10 days. They have also Enfield for rent so in the meantime you don't have to sit around and wait but can hit the road again.

can´t imagine, that it will work for only $300-400.
shipped back my bike from delhi this march.
the costs were 26.000 ir (at this time ~€440.-)
but watch out,these are not the complete costs.
if you don`t get out the bike yourself from the seaport in europe,there are
extra costs.
i have to pay €250.- more, for port and handling costs.
when i get back my bike (it´s still in hamburg) i will do a complete setting up of costs on the shipping page.
