Sea freight from Calcutta

yes, I've heard and read the horror stories, but is it still feasable?

Airfreighting my bike from Kathmandu to Auckland New Zealand is going to cost $2000.

Calcutta is 1000kms away. Does anyone know of any agents where I can get a sea freight price from in Calcutta?

Cheers

Fern

Here it is!
try to get in touch with them. i've managed to fly my bike from kolkata to bangkok (using Thai Cargo) with this firm:
Gati international
contact person: Uttam Banerjee +91 99039 74171
mail: intl underscore cour underscore dept underscore ccu at gati dot com
i've paid something about 600 euro (january 2011) for the whole thing (was a 2,31 cubic meters and plus 500 kgs crate)
they were never been involved in shipping bike abroad before i step into their office. it takes me few days to put clearly in their mind what to do and how to do it, but it has worked out...
hope this helps you.

I flew my bike from Delhi to Bangkok with Cathay last week. Costs per kg are 60 Rupees plus all the usual fees. Shipping company is called Cargo Planners.

No personal experience, though I've shipped by air from Chennai. 2000 US from Nepal to NZ sounds about right for airfreight. Beware the costs at the receiving end though, especially when using seafreight! And I thought Delhi & Mumbai traffic was quite bad, but everyone said Calcutta is the worst of all... really not so sure, if I'd like to arrange shipping from there, as you'll find yourself needing to go here and there around the city all the time! But if you want to take it as an experience, then why not....

Follow up?

Hi Fern,

Quick note, did you end up doing this? We are looking at shipping from Syd to Calcutta also, or flying straight to Kathmandu...

Hope your trip was a success!

Cheers
Tom

I shipped a Landcruiser from Calcutta in early 2008.

It WAS an absolute nightmare, but a lot of this was my fault as I hadn't understood the process, specifically the need to book it WELL in advance.

The company I used was LCL Freight Solutions Pvt Ltd, 3, Wood Street, Park Street, Kolkata - +91 33 22813769

Contact name is Amit Bhaduri - I will PM you his email address if you want it.

Hope this helps

Mark
