RORO to Indonesia
We are planning to travel to Indonesia with our truck (7500KG) from Malaysia by Ferry by October 2012.

We are told of a Ferry service from Port Klang? but nothing what sounds really firm or positive. riend of mine is moving to KL for wrk promised to do some work? Any help/suggestions/contats is really appreciated |
In Port Klng there is no Ferry service at the moment officially, not even for a motorbike. But we shipped fromm there. But its not possible to take the boat we took with a car, no way. We carried the bike with 10 people onto the ferry. Anything bigger will just not fit.
I dont think you can find something out if you are not on the spot. Emails the people there do not reply, phone usually they dont pick up. From my expiriance I would guess you have to rent a container and ship to one of the big ports, Jakarta, Belawan, Dumai etc... But take care there you are trapped, the custom guys in Jakarta and Dumai are just totally ...... They told two friends of mine that they have to pay 2.000 USD to release the bikes. They tried two weeks but there was no way out, so they payed it.... |
I think Belawan is the place to ship to. Heard of lots and lots of trouble at other ports.
Finding a proper car ferry could be tough, but there have been such services sometimes. Problem is, the situation changes almost daily, so if you find one, be quick, because it may not operate next week! |

I have not been to Indonesia by car/ferry so all info is appreciated sofar not much positive. Anyway after 3 years on the road we are used to a bit of waiting,confusion, disorganzation. So we will see when we get there? Normally there always seem to be a way? If impossible we change our plans. No worries many other places to visit. Love to be kept updated on this matter. I agree things seem to change dailys |

currently in Dumai looking for a RoRo to Malaysia, if anyone has more info please do share. From what I heard the service from Medan is no longer available for cars (I'm in a 4wd) so Dumai is the best option. To be confirmed though. @Fearless, did you manage to get across ?? @Sasha, any help is appreciated mate, you did tell me about your contacts in Sumatra, if they can help, I'd be grateful. (PS : how was Timor ?:thumbup1:) Thanks, if anyone has info on ferries between Sumatra and Malaysia, keep this post updated. Okay after much research here's the situation.
In Dumai, no cargo ferries are allowed to go, it's due to port authorities. Only passenger ferries go, which is a shame since it's the shorter distance between the two countries. In Batam, same story, only passenger ferries. That leaves Medan. We've had contacts with three private companies, as they are no official RoRo ferries. The ONLY way is via container. Currently we're trying to negotiate a 40foot container in which to put the two Troopies. If that works out, it'll be about 900USD for the container, including taxes and custom clearance. Another company charged 900USD for a small container, so make sure you shop around before you make a decision. You will need a full list of the content of the car (depending on the company the list has to be as detailed as the number of socks you're bringing in...doh), your carnet, a letter of authority (which will be written by the company so no worries there) and your passport. That's it. When we have confirmation, I will post the name and contact details of the company we've chosen. Cheerio, Boags. |

One last comment, about the handling in Malaysia on the other side. There are three steps to get the cars out :
- The shipping line, just go there with the bill of lading and pay the bill. 840rm in our case since there was two BL and one container. - The harbor handlers, get there, ask to speak to "Jay Cee" or his boss (the only Sikh in the building, you can't miss him) and they will take care of you. 250rm for getting the container from the yard, opening it and getting your car on the tarmac. - The customs to clear it. 8rm per car, and half a day of running around. Had we gone through an agent, we'd have paid over a thousand dollars (we had a quote for 1200AUD), so do yourself a favor, do the job yourself. It's a lot of paperwork but it'll save a huge chunk of money. On the road again then !:funmeteryes: |
