Roads in western Nepal - question

Ladies & Gents,

In a month's time I hope to enter Nepal from India at the western-most border post (Mahendranagar). My 2007 guide book states that some parts of the road heading East towards Nepalgunj etc might be impassable due to Maoist sabotage of bridges. I have not kept up to date with news and would imagine any damage has been repaired, but has anyone out there recently ridden these roads?

Re fuel, hopefully the situation will back to normal shortly.

Thanks a lot,

Bob

Hi,

I drove from Banbasa/Mahendranagar to Kathmandu in Aug. 2010, while I was going from Italy to Nepal with a Ford Transit.
The road and the bridges were in quite good conditions. The last bridge of the Mahendra Highway was completed in summer 2010: there are not "crossways" in the rivers anymore.

In 2010 I didn't see any maoist, but I had to stop for a few hours due to a national strike. In Nepal strikes are frequent, and protesters often block even the traffic of private vehicles.
Never try to force a road block!

I drove Mahendranagar to Pokhara in end Nov 2011. Roadconditions wre good. nice road. liked it. there was only one bridge (befor Bardia National Park) wich was in some construction and you have to go out of the raod true the river. but no rainsaison = less water: o lot of fun to cross.

enjoy it and make a stop in bardia national park. ist awweeesome
