Purchase in Malaysia, than Indonesia

Greetings,

Trying to come up with a definitive plan for exploring Indonesia and than the rest of SE Asia. But I've encountered a small problem, a foreigner in Indonesia cannot own a bike unless they are residing on a long term visa. It's no problem to get a bike, but probably impossible to take it out of the country.
So wonderin what the regulations are in Malaysia, specifically
1. Can a tourist legally purchase a bike? If so
2. Can that motorbike be brought into Indonesia for say 6 months or other ASEAN nations?
3. Is a carnet required or any other paperwork, insurance/tax?
4. Are good 250cc trail bikes, DR'S, XR's, Yam TT's, available in Malaysia and what is the price new?

I believe I'm right in believing that Malaysians don't need a visa for Indonesia. Thus hoping as in Europe you can travel unimpeded with your own vehicle through Indo and neighbouring countries.
Was originally planning on going from South Africa to Indonesia and back. Too much shipping so will now make it two separate trips.

Cheers,
Mick

I suspect that it'd be easier to buy a larger bike (250cc+), in Singapore as there may well be a larger Euro/Aus ex-pat population to obtain an imported bike from... Easy to get there from anywhere in Peninsula Malaysia!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
