In Malaysia

Finally started my travelling. Flew out of Brisbane on Friday 14 July and spent the next few days sightseeing around KL waiting for my bike to arrive. Bike arrived on 18 July at KLIA and was easy getting it cleared and unpacked. I'll post a shipping report with all the details when I have time. Flying the bike to KL was very easy though. I will be going to the MotoGP in September so now have lots of time to tour round Malaysia before heading to Thailand. Taking it easy, my first days ride was south to Melaka via back roads. Riding here is very easy because there are so many scooters and everything is geared up for them, eg, toll bypas roads for motorcycles and other drivers are used to looking for bikes. Off to Kota Tingi tomorrow then slowly north along the east coast.

Rethink, hanging around in Malaysia until the MotoGP is too long, most likely heading to Thailand in around 2 weeks time. Looking forward to a change of country already

Have you considered Laos and/or Cambodia too to help fill in time?

I'm heading back home to Brissy next year, I can't wait.

Cambodia and Laos are both in my plans. I'm currently back in Kuala Lumpur and head off tomorrow towards Penang then on to Thailand after that.

Sounds like a great trip you've started. Are you running a blog?
I would love to read about it 'cause thats the trip I've got planned in a couple of years. SE Asia sounds far enough away from it to be different.

Sorry but I haven't got a blog. At the moment I am in Phuket, Thailand and slowly heading north towards Cambodia. All I can tell you at the moment is do it when you have the chance. The riding has been uneventful and as you say, the scenery and people are different enough to make it interesting and enjoyable.

If you get the chance I'd be interested to hear how much it costs you to survive in that area.I dont want to bother you with with exact expenditure figures just approx $ costs per day or week and the type of digs you stay in.
The freight costs for the bike would be great too.

Sorry mate, haven't been on here for a while. I'lll have a flick through my diary and let you know roughly what I have been spending when I get a fair bit of time on the internet. Daily cost really depends on how you want to travel though. You can be really cheap and stay in dorms and always eat at street stalls or you could go the luxury option and spend a fortune. I'm on the cheapish but comfortable side. Beer and smokes add to my costs too even though smokes are a lot cheaper than Aus. Have a flick through any of the lonely planet guides too, they are a pretty good indication of accomodation costs. Anyway, I'll give you rough figures soon.

Sounds like the comfort level I want to travel at so dont sweat it. When you sort it out mail me with some figures. I think you should get the into the essentials category, thats what being on the road's all about, pleasing yourself !! Going to look at a V-Strom on the weekend, first step to SE Asia for me.
