Mongolian border crossing...

I've just received advice that the Mongolian consulate website in Britain states that the only way to enter Mongolia is by train or plane - no private vehicles - unless prior approval from the authorities is granted. Can anyone confirm through experience that this is necessary? Or can you get around this?

A number of travellers have certainly entered with bikes, and nothing special that I know of.

To those who have been there - what was required?

Not so sure...

Unless this has changed recently I cannot confirm that it's that easy...
Last year (2001) we entered Mongolia at this bordercrossing north of UB, and we had to take thetrain! Because of our big and heavy bikes it was not possible to take them in the train, and we had to arrange some Mongolians to have them pushing our bikes across the road border. But with your 400 bike, you should definetly try to take it in the train.
This whole hassle took us two days, both or entering and exiting this country. Anyway, it's worth it!

Maybe Vincent has been there more recently, and the regulations have changed. When we were there in August 2001 they were just in the process of constructing a new (appearently international) crossing, but it didn't seem to be even nearly finished. Anybody have some reliable infos about that?

Greetings, patrick!

Has anyone crosed from Russia into Mongolia via Tashantain the Alty republic of Russia, or via Kyzyl in the Tuva Republic. I want to see eastern Mongolia but with minimal backtracking and have read you can leave mongolia this way but the Russians wouldn't let you in, so I figure they might let you leave this way and return via Ulan Baator.

i ve tried my best to cross where you say
no ways for me, i know russia and mongolia a bit, was there in 2001 and 2002.
the russians wouldn t allow yoi
but maybe if you arrange it when you are in the altai in russia, you ask to the main police station of the altai region, forgot the name of the city
lonely planet talks about it in its russain book

good luck
