Sounds like the exact trip we are planning. Have some experience with bike and cars but was really looking forward to someone fairly decent to buy it from. There'll be two of us on there and I was wondering if the 350 would cope but looks fine. I'll head to this guy in Dehli. I take it this is a part of Dehli and this guy will be fairly easy to catch hold of. Would be very prepared to pay $1250 for a decent bike. It's a lot less than I thought.

Three questions.

Can you give us some ideas of a route. We're in europe in a camper so it's pretty hard for planning anything.

Is there any insurance needed.

Any idea on shipping cost back to the states? Planning on shipping it to NZ so it should be a similar price.

sorry but i couldnt log onto hotmail tonight for some reason or another. so to find lalli go to delhi and as for Karol Bagh, near the main bazar, also lallisingh.com, you can call him. he will work out the insurance and tell you all about the shipping. he knows everything. a guy that can be trusted. as far as a trip, if you are heading over this time you might not want to do what I did. I just got back last month after a six month trip. I started in delhi in march and rode through rajahstan for a month out to jaisalmer (awsome), jodhpur and bikaner then back to delhi. from there I went up to uttaranchal and up to gangotri after rishikesh spent another month up in the high mountains riding the twisties over to dehra dunn and shimla. from there I picked up my girlfriend in dehli and headed to dharamsala and then started a journey to jammu and up to srinagar, over to leh, then all over ladakh for a month. after headed down to manali down to uttaranchal crossing of nepal and over to pokhara and then to kathamandu. looped back down to U.P. state and over to Lucknow and Agra and finally back to Delhi. About 7000 miles. I was beat. but my advice if you ar heading over now is to go to south india and ride down to the tip loop around from the west coast to the east and ride up to calcutta, check out assam, or nepal and varnassi and then back to delhi. massive trip. but it is the time to do it. forget about ladakh the winter will set in soon and the road will be miserable, and it already was when i was there 2 months ago. I plan on heading back next year and finishg up the south. If you are into a shifter on the left side ask for the thunderbird form lalli, and if he has the red one you will love it. I named him shakti baba, good boy. no worries with both of you. you will learn the feel of it. I had the boxes on the side and a big waterproof bag that held two back packs on the back rack. Lalli will do everything for you. if you have anymore ques. ask. Tell Lalli hi for me and that I'll be back next year. good luck and watch out for everything, I mean everything!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like a big big trip.

Got in touch with your fella. Said he could sort everything out. Do you know the age of the bike you bought (Could just get this one). Said there may be a problem shipping anything younger than 2000 model to NZ. Can afford a new one but wouldn't want to if I can't ship it at the end.

Cheers for the route, I've been told the North would be too cold. I've heard you can stick a bike on a train. Do you know anything about this.

Shipping it by train is pretty cheap. All stations will have loaders who will pack your bike securely for a fee (Rs 100 to 150 incl of material). Just remember that all breakable items that stick out (mirrors/indicators/levers etc) are better removed and stowed away. Stuff will probably be dumped on top of your bike in the train - be prepared and pack accordingly - usually the loaders do a pretty good job, esp if you offer a few rupees above the asking rate, which is a lot cheaper than getting that dent out of your tank or replacing broken plastic.

The railways are reasonable too - rate depends on the value of your bike, usually will be Rs 1 per km, or less.

V imp. -Drain your tank of all petrol, then leave the fuel cock open, after removing the fuel pipe to allow the remaining drops to evaporate, at the time of packing your bike. Inflammable materials on the train attract a stiff fine + jail term. At least a large bribe, at the very least, to compassionate officials who do not have the heart to make you a government guest during your holiday .

Also check whether octroi/ other taxes are due at the destination station (such as Mumbai). You may choose to book your bike to a station 50 km before your destination, and ride the rest of the way unless you actually like having long and fruitless discussions with officialdom on the tax issue.
