Manali to Leh
 

Can anyone advise on this route, experiences etc. Sounds like fuel/range might be a problem. Are there also any altitude specific issues I should be aware of?

Only done this as part of a tour (on their bikes) but the road is rough, very, in places. Fuel is a problem, but there are places you can buy it - if you know where - local knowledge would be good.Not petrol stations.
You pass over the second highest pass in the world on the way, so, yes there may be altitude issues - some one who's done it on their own bike would better advice.
From memory there is one tented campsite you can stop at (possible to book ?) and another spot where you camp, but you can hire tents and porters who return to the above after your stay. (This if you haven't a tent)
The altituude is a definate problem for you, need to aclimatise by riding high camping low and building up to the height - Leh is high too. People that fly staright in often feel bad for a while.

It is absolutely fantastic - hope to do it on our trip if possible. If you get to Leh, see if you can find out how to get a pass for 'the worlds highest motorable road' forget name. Behind Leh.
Ladakh is stunning, absolutely stunning (unless you dno't like mountains !)

PS. definitely, only fuel stop is at bridge before keylong. keylong to leh is 380km

I did this road in July this year on my R65 and met Chris (above) in Leh. Absolutely stunning trip not least because it is so remote with awesome scenery. A small plastic container of fuel (5-10 liters) will make sure you get to Leh alright, the road is rough as hell though, with water levels in the creeks rising in the afternoon as the snow melts. I put smaller jets in my carbs because i had them, but would have made it easily without them. I saw a guy go over Kudung La (5600m) north of Leh on an old 125cc scooter (the permit for this is straight forward in Leh). Health wise, if you take 3 days to get to Leh, altitude shouldn't be a problem as the passes and camping spots get progressively higher.
