Malaysia / Indonesia / Sending back Carnet to Europe
Hi,

Currently in Thailand & would like to go via Malaysia and Indonesia into Australia. My carnet will expire in May 2009, and I got an invite from a friend in Oz to stay for a while (before I then continue to S-America).

Only problem seems: Because the Carnet will expire in May, I need a new one. So this means sending it back to Germany & wait for a new one to arrive. This is only possible to do in Malaysia, and only if I don't need one for Malaysia.

So: Is Malaysia possible without Carnet? And how long does regular (registered) mail take between Malaysia and Europe? Other option of course are courier services, but they tend to be extremely expensive and also (from my past experience with UPS) NOT reliable at all...

Hi Björn,
our Carnet expired in Austrlia but it was no problem to get sent a new one. But we had prepaired an application form before we left and just sent it to the ADAC. We sent the old one home after receiving the exit stamp (which was about 2 months after expiry date). We got another stamp in the new carnet with the number of the old one and that was it.
One guy we met made it into Malaysia without Carnet and he was on the way to Indonesia.

Hi Holger,

Sounds nice & easy. Is this the 'official way' to do it, or does it depend on who you're dealing with in Oz? Thing is: I've heard rumours that sometimes the Australians won't even let you in if your carnet is close to expiry date (1-2 months).

Carnet for Malaysia
Hi Bjorn,

Got your PMs. At the M'sia northern Bukit kayu Hitam border the customs did ask for my carnet and bike reg. papers, etc. They give 3 months bike stay once insurance is purchased from nearby store. I have the impression the carnet was not necessary, it was asked as it had all bike particulars on it. So they did not check the bike physically.

I was informed by the French AA (where I got my carnet) that its possible for the local M'sia AA in KL to extend (for 3 months) or renew carnet locally - you can get their KL phone contacts on their website - there's a carnet section mentioned. That may avoid your waiting for carnet return. I suspect they'll also ask you for the carnet in Indonesia.

Am still in france but will be in M'sia to collect my bike next weekend, then head up to Thailand. Our path may cross so see you on the road. Keep in touch.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
