Chiang Mai is the place to go to. Lots of rental options there, a nice city (about 30 times smaller than Bangkok!) and beautiful curvy roads (tarmac and gravel) are all around the north. I thought the best routes were close to Burma or Lao borders, but really there´s no shortage of great roads anywhere in the north, just get a good, detailed map with road numbers on it.

Some nice routes also in the southern part of the country, but it´s a long way, and big roads are just boring. For 2-3 weeks, I´d head to CM, and stay in the north.

(Sorry I do not have specific info on CM rentals, as I never rented from there, because I´ve got a friend who lives near BKK, and always rented bikes from him).

somewhere up in the north, Dec-2005:

Anywhere in Northern Thailand will be fantastic.

I made contact with Miles from http://thaimotorcycletouring.com/ who organised a few days riding with him and friends as my travel plans didn't coincide with one of their tours. I used one of their Honda CB400's.

Whilst in Chiang Mai, Miles recommended Tony's Big Bikes.
Just for blipping around the town and local villages I used a Honda C90-type (geared) and even 2-up that managed the hills easily. So easy to park and flick around the traffic. Do visit the Night Market.

I then hired a Honda VRX 400cc from Tony for longer distances.
I would highly recommend riding to Thailand's Highest Peak (8514 feet) in the Doi Intanon National Park. Take a warm layer with you! There are wonderful waterfalls and the roads / views are wonderful.
We also visited the amazing Chiang Dao Caves and a bit further away you could go up to the hilltribes (a bit touristy now though).
Be aware of roadworks - they like to dig down to the sand and rocks

With 2-3 weeks you could easily do a loop tour from Chiang Mai and back

PS - just remembered that Big Tony's had suggested itineraries in the shop. He also provided a helmet but we took our own summer m'cycle gloves (walking shoes for boots). In Udon Thani we purchased helmets from the Tesco Express (seriously!).

I recommend Joe Sauerborn (Joe's Bike Team) in Chiang Mai for rental.

Check the 2011 RR link in my signature, below, for some extra motivation, (although I don't think you need it ;-) )

Chiang Mai as mentioned above is a great Place to start. There are many rental shops along the main streets of Chiang Mai. Tonys big bikes, Pop rental, Mr mecanic etc etc.
There is very competent rental Company in Chiang Rai as well named Chiang Rai bike bike rentals. Have more Equipment such as luggage options, GPS, motorbike clothing and protection gear than the Chiang Mai ones.

Most of Northern Thailand is fantastic for motorbike touring. Especially the provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Phayao, Nan (maybe the Pearl of them all....) Even east to Loei province in northeastern Thailand is great.

People is friendly and helpful, accomodation is plentiful and cheap, Food and drinks are also abundant and delicious and cheap.

Things change

Well, when things change in your live you have to make the most of it, I am hoping to have Dec and Jan off (which is less time I was planning on, but other things cropped up, never mind) I am now having to look into Thailand, Laos and Cambodia (not that I am bothered), intending to take my kit with me but will need to hire a bike, don't want to be spending a fortune on flights. SO...... I am looking for bike rental in the BKK area which will allow me to go over the border?
Also will six weeks be enough and I am not sure whether to take tent or use hotels
Any help would be great

Thanks a lot
Wayne

Hi, Thailand is a great Place to escape the winter. 125cc Scooters are offered for rent everywere for 5 Dollars per day, specialy in the City Chiang Mai. From Bangkok you can take the cheap train or a bus to get there. Here are some descriptions of the so called "loops" such as Mae hong son loop, golden triangle loop but also loops in Laos and Cambodia:
