Laos: What's your favorite route?

Since Laos is a narrow country, there are only a few possible ways to get through it, but just the same, it would be cool to see some photos from other riders' trips through Laos. Here are a few of my favorite pics, and a drawing of the river bars in Vang Vieng.

My route: China -> Boten -> Nam Tha -> Ou Domxai -> Luang Prabang -> Phongsavahn -> Vientiane -> Savannakhet -> Cambodia

Small bikes (125 step-through type) are no longer rented in some areas due to too many accident prone falang drivers ;-)

"Big" bikes (250cc and rarely above) are easily rented in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, sometimes also in Pakxe. If arranged suffieniently in advance some of the rental companies can drop a bike for you somewhere else, e.g. at Huai Xai (border with Thailand). Both Jimoi and Jules are good guys to rent from. More info on the gt-rider forum.

The GT-Rider map of Laos is pretty much mandatory (the rental places will have it) and the only decent map of the country in existance. As for routes ... too many to write about here. And it depends very much on what you want, paved road or off-road (fantastic in Laos), backpackers, sex/drugs/rocknroll, nature, landscapes, hilltribes, culture ... ?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events (22 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
