Can i ship our bikes from Indonesia to Darwin?

Hi everyone.
I'm after a little info about shipping/air freight from Indonesia to Darwin Australia.

We should hopefully be in Indo around November and will need to send our bikes to Darwin for December.

What are our best options?
Ride all the way to Dili and ship from there or is it better/cheaper/shorter shipping time doing it from somewhere earlier through Indo?

Also does anyone have any rough prices we might expect to pay?

Thanks
Will

I´ve shipped by air from Bali to Perth, but 1st of all, this was +8 years ago, March 2008. Secondly, there was no wide-body aircraft operating on that route, so the bike had to fly via Melbourne! The cost, partly because of that enormous de-tour, was around 1200 euros for the bike. Note, that everything could be different now, but yes, you can send from Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya etc. if you want. Personally I would probably just ride to Dili, and send from there to Darwin by sea. I didn´t want to do that at that time, because there had been a coup attempt in East Timor, and security situation over there was bad.

I rode through a good bit of Indonesia last year and to Dili and shipped to Darwin. The price was 850 USD on the Dili side and another 230 AUSD in Darwin.
I highly recommend to ride through the eastern/southern islands of Indonesia, very scenic and interesting and less traffic than than Java/Bali/parts of Sumatra where the traffic is just totally insane tight and thus more enjoyable. Ferries between the islands are quite straightforward and easy except the last leg from Flores to Timor which can be a rough ride - but its all a part of the adventure.

I didnt go through any agent so I contacted the company ANL/Toll directly.
Their contactperson in Dili is Lenor Castulo. Emailadresss: lenor.castulo@anltl.tl

Inforgot to mention that the shipping takes a fait it of time since the ships route is Darwin - Dili - Singapore - Darwin. It takes 18-20 days and then somw more time to get things out of quarantine in Darwin.

@Snakeboy: How did you ship? In a container? ~ $1000 sounds more than fair!

Yes the bike was put in a container. You will need to buy decent straps to secure the bike in the container. 20 USD a piece and 4 pieces.

Well for 1 motorcycle, that is actually rather expensive, is it not? And it takes almost 3 weeks?

This is a completely outside option, but at the time of my trip (2008), someone mentioned there might be a chance to charter some kind of boat, or depending on season, even a yacht from Kupang West Timor (Indonesia). I remember even getting in talks with a guy named Bob La Macchia, who run some kind of fishing boats from there, turned out he did not have any options for that period of time, and actually I have absolutely no clue, if he is even around there any more. But if you´re not short on time, then just going to Kupand & asking around might be useful.

I agree that its rather expensive and that its a bit time consuming as well. But theres not any other options as I know of... Havent heard of anybody doing it any other way on that stretch. But if there would be any other alternative it would be great...

Expensive for one motorcycle, yes. But not expensive for a container that could hold 8 bikes or a car..

It was not for a whole container, it was only for the bike. The rest of the container was filled up with other stuff such as a huge generator etc.

I went with a shipping forwarder called Bollore Logistics - they were about 800 AUD on Aus side and 125 USD on Dili side, and very helpful (it was in the other direction though, so port fees may be different). I did see a web page that says Swire shipping has a service that goes in the opposite direction (I didn't go with them for this reason). They don't seem to be used too often though...

East Timor (Dili) and Darwin Service

East-Timor has been beautiful, almost no tourist presence if thats what you're into.

Cheers,
Jason

Get in touch with these guys below, in Dili East Timor. They are offering the cheapest rates at present.

Luis, poor bugger has Dengue fever and is in Siloam hospital in Bali, eventually he is heading this way via Dili! Obviously the more bikes you guys can round up the cheaper it gets!

If you need a place in Darwin to crash or pitch the tent, work on the bike ect ect, get in touch :-)
