Lao road conditions
What is the road condition from Vientiane to Boten? Is it suited for non-enduro bike? What about a sports bike?

The road I am interested in is: Vientiane - Muang Phon Hong - Muang Phon Khoun - Luang Pha Bang - Oudomxay - Boten.

Is there a better route to Lao-Chinese border, perhaps?

Lao road conditions
Hi My knowledge is a couple of years out of date, there are lots of new roads being built by the Chinese. For up to date info try asking on GT riders ( golden triangle riders) David Unkovitch is the man and can give you current details.(Its a good road up to within 50km of China from memory, sealed and doable on anything).

Jimmy advise is 100% right, my info is now over a year old so I'm not going to say anything as I don't know for sure.

If anyone could add anything here that would be great as I'm going to be doing this route again next year.

dit al of nord laos 2 years ago. the roads of thad route ar al sealed.
2 years ago they where stil working on the last 20 km but i think thad is ok now . for a other route optoin you kan take a boat from luang-prabang to pakbeng from there to oudomxai .

Laos road
I was there last year went all arround the country and to be honest the rode are pretty good most of the time , much better than Cambodia or Vietnam .
Just make sure that the pot hole don't kill your whell and if you are using sintectic oil buy it in advance as sometime the choice of oil for the engine is really poor.

I was there during christmas 06. We didnt travel your route but the roads were great. The germans were actually building roads for Loas. Extremly dusty! but no major ruts / rocks. a few bridges hadnt been built yet but there was an excellent ferry system in place for a few bucks. Have fun Loas is a beautiful place & people.

What about getting into Lao with your bike? Any underwater stones? Or registration papers is suffisient?

Check this web site out - it pretty much has all the information you require, about getting into the country. We hired bikes over there - which were pretty thin on the ground. We travelled around on the GTrider maps which was great! tells you everything you need to know. Laos people are always willing to help.
Even when we ventured into the restricted zone - the police/army where a bit difficult but you learn not to stop to talk to then or give then some money if they are not letting you where you want to...

I'm heading back there in the February, this time ill be bring my bike into the country. from what I've heard it would be to much of a problem.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
