Ladakh: madaan/inder, 350/500?

Hello there,

Arrived in Delhi and looking for an Enfield. I went to Madaan and to Inder. The bikes are looking really beautifull (form the outside). Both places seemed to have the same quality bikes. So now I have to make a decision, 350 or 500 and Madaan or Inder..
Together with my girlfriend and luggage we're weighting 170 KG (I know...) and we're heading for Ladakh so we probalbly can use some extra power. That's why I'm tinking to get the 500. It's more expensive, so when anyone will tell me a 350 will do, let me know!
And Madaan or Inder, I'm hearing good stories about both shops.

For a 350 (2001) 45000 and for a 500 both are asking 55.000 (2002 model), including toolbox, spareparts and some other small things. Is this a good price?

Anyone who can clear my mind in this heat, thanks!!

Can't comment on the shops or prices but I'd go for the 500 definitely and make sure the compression is spot on because if the cylinder head gasket is leaking at all than you won't get anywhere at altitude.

With 2 of you and luggage a 500 would be way better. Or you could get a 350 each!

If the total payload is 170 kg including you, your girlfriend and your luggage, then you can do the ladakh journey on a 350 provided it’s in good shape. Obviously getting a 500 is much better, but my emphasis here would be on condition as the criteria. Getting a crappy 500 just because it has more cc wont get you any where, however getting a good condition 500 would mean lesser gearshifts.

Also a point to remember would be the fuel consumption; a 350 would give around 8-10kms more to liter, effectively increasing your range. Some thing which is of significant importance if you are going to Ladakh, the last petrol pump on the Manali – Leh highway is tandi 375kms from Leh.

So you should carry at least 7-8 liter spare petrol for 350 and around 10-15liters for 500.
